Favorite way/place to sell or trade in gear?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I'm surprised no one mentioned a photographers web site named "uglyhedgehog". I believe this is one of the older forums and it has a buy, sell, trade classifieds forum. The membership is free and there is no charge to sell. You can upload up to ten photos of items you are selling. Items must be photography related. I believe the membership number is over 100,000 and all are photographers and follow the forum regularly. If you haven't, try it and I believe you will be pleasantly surprised. BTW: Steve has a membership. Good luck!
Never heard of this one.

Hello,

Let's say you have invested in a bunch of Nikon DSLR gear and are seriously considering switching to Sony mirrorless, where would you sell your Nikon gear if straight up selling it and if trading it in with whom would you do that? I've purchased and sold on Ebay and craigsist in the past. I've sold gear - one time - to Adorama, have purchased a LOT of gear from Lens Authority and from B&H but have always shot Nikon and have never tried to move a bunch of gear at once. Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts.
I’d be interested in seeing what you have. I’m not moving from Nikon anytime soon ...

Nikonians is another site that has been around for a long time and has a classifieds forum. I have bought many things there without any problems whatsoever. It is well monitored for problems by its members. I believe that you do have to be a member first to sell, $25/yr, but that also makes it a bit safer IMO.

Thank you! I'd forgotten about them.

I had a bad experience with Adorama recently. I sent them several lenses to trade in for D6. They quoted me $1400 over the phone, then changed it to $1000 after they received them. He said it was because there was some damage to the lenses. I knew that was a lie because they were like new in the original boxes. I said no and please return them as I was told that I could do before sending them. They virtually held the lenses hostage for two weeks despite daily calls to inquire why they refused to send them back. I finally requested to speak to someone higher up over the manager of the Used Equipment Dept. First I was unable to get a name or phone number but my next call I connected with a NEW employee that apparently wasn't instructed to give that info out. Next call was to my original sales person and told him that his boss kept coming up with excuses not to send them back I mentioned that my next call was to his boss's box. He had me hold the line for several minutes until his boss got back to me and send he would send me a check immediately for his original quote plus an extra $100 for my trouble. Not what I wanted to get but felt that I was forced to take the money or be in a forever loop trying to get them returned as promised. I will NEVER use Adorama again despite a long trouble-free relationship with them since the 1980. But it was my first experience trying to trade/sell them anything. Your experience may be different tan mine but my experience selling them lenses was horrible, as was my last experience selling camera equipment on eBay. A lot of bidders bidding up the price then not paying. payPal was no help in getting my money either. They suggested that I contact last enforcement or the FBI.
Sorry to hear that. I recently asked to be taken off their mailing lists to no avail and when I put a couple of things in my cart out wouldn't let me delete any of them.

Thanks so much for all the input. It is greatly appreciated. Should I decide to sell it all I'm gonna check out Nikoniand, uglyhedgehog and check in with a local comer store before anything else.

i have most sold to locally - to camera club members.

Second place I sell more uncommon (low demand) gear is FredMiranda. It takes time to build a reputation but there no fees from the forum, only paypal fees.

I have occasionally used eBay but their fees are too high except when I can not sell any other way.
