Craig, this is a tremendous shot for all the reasons listed above. Tin Man Lee (look him up) won an international (?) wildlife award with a similar shot. There are a few very minor touches in LRC you can do to bring out the bear's eye and claws and the back of the sockeye (?) salmon to make this a competitive image.
Well done! I wish I had a shot like this. How did you get down to eye level like this?

Fabulous shot. Everything is perfection. I'm off to Katmai next week with my 100-400 on the Z9.
Curious what focus area you had the most success with. Wide area with animal detection? Then switch to 3D once eye detected..the Steve Perry Way from his book. Again, fabulous photo!

Having shot the brown bears in Katmai on numerous trips this shot is outstanding. Once they get moving there is so much water in the air you almost never get a clean head shot. Especially when they are near the end and doing the last big leap with their arms outstretched. Terrific.

Just got back from an amazing bear shoot in Alaska.

You can certainly be very proud of this captured moment, and isn't the 100-400 tolerable

Only an opinion

Thank you very much for the comments. Most of my shooting was done laying over my backpack. Hard on my neck, but happy with some of the angles I was able to captured.

Still many shots to go through, but these two also got me to eye level or below. Amazing experience for me.

Thank you very much. I have AF-mode/subject (animal) detection on my "I" menu and was switching between a few; Wide S, Wide L, and my customized C-1 (horizontal rectangle) and C-2 (pretty small square). As you mentioned, I would then BB to 3D when eye locked. I don't know if any were better than others, but I probably used C1 horizontal rectangle the most.

As you stated, pretty tough to get clean head shots with no water droplets. Head ons were better than side shots, but still had to get pretty lucky.

Thank you.

I wanted to bring my 500 f4, but it is old and heavy (still takes wonderful pics). I was very happy with the 100-400 range on the Z9. That last picture was taken at 100mm and I just cropped a tiny bit for a little better composition (settings weren't perfect, but bear kept me from concentrating. Pretty certain my 500 would not have been used much with the encounters I had.
