Focus shift frustration

hindsight is 20-20. but just think of all the advantages from the Sony system ..
Yeah I’m very happy with the bodies and lenses and hopefully maybe they’ll do a firmware update that includes it lol. Gotta keep my fingers crossed anyhow

camera companies have a really bad case of NIH (Not Invented Here). If the other company does something, they can not possibly copy it. It must be uniquely their own. For years (I think it was Canon) would not be box around the outside of the histogram display because Nikon had it, though it was a good idea.

Yeah it is sort of strange the way things work out with camera companies.

Automated is better as long as the weight is manageable. Cognisys makes some great tools but the require power (or batteries) and rather heavy to lug out into the field.
I have the Cognisys Stackshot and it has much greater control of the stacking parameters than on my Z9. You can set the start and stop positions and the step size according to a depth of field table such as this (Table 2-A). It can be battery operated but I agree with Rich that is mainly for studio/home use. The WeMacro automated rail is a more cost effective solution.

If price is no object, the Novoflex rail (see here) is compact and can be battery operated. For more information go to here. The battery option is shown at about 6:35 m in tthe video.

The cognisys looks really nice and not too expensive. Is it difficult to get going with it?

I switched from Nikon to Sony a year ago and really miss the ability to do in camera focus shift shooting. I can’t for the life of me understand why a camera like the A1 hasn’t had this added via firmware. Sure it can still be done manually but even the cheapest offerings from Nikon and Cannon offer this feature. I think the me A7RV has this feature but it’s not feasible to purchase a $4K camera body for one function. I’ve contemplated getting a used Z7 but then would have to purchase another damn lens on top of that. I’m hoping someone has heard rumors from Sony possibly implementing this feature via firmware in the future, but not likely lol.
The Z9 has reasonable focus shifting but I've always had better results by doing it manually ... 🦘

Yeah I’ve had good luck as well and for the time being will continue doing so. The Sony 90mm macro is a true manual lens which makes it easier.
