The big issue is your color gamut. There are plenty of less expensive monitors with 100% coverage of AdobeRGB.
As mentioned in post number 1, 14, and 22, both of the models I'm considering are 100% sRGB. I will never use any color space other than sRGB. Therefore, other color gamuts don't factor into this buying decision. I don't mean to be rude to you in particular, but people keep raising this point after it's already been addressed, and it's beginning to frustrate me.
ASUS (because 2 out of the 3 monitors they sold me were defective right out of the box) and BENQ are out of the running. Too many issues with quality control for both companies. Look at some of the BENQ reviews on Amazon. The following reviews are for the 32" 4K monitor (SW271C) I was initially researching:
1 "This monitor was to be for my photography, however, two weeks after setting it up I had these wavy lines going across the screen. Rebooted and they went away. Two weeks later happened again. tried calling and emailing BenQ and could not get any response. A week later happened again. Tried to post a video but was too large to upload so a picture will have to do. I have tried over four days to reach someone to no avail. No response to email or phone calls. I would love to have this monitor but will not buy from this company again. Too bad, such a beautiful monitor when it works."
2 "This is where the good ends and the not-so-good, to just dumb, begins:
- This panel has a single stuck blue pixel. This is a thousand dollar monitor targeting color perfectionists, so it's going back to amazon for a swap.
- There is some noticeable light bleed on the edges. It's not bad, but it's not great.
- The monitor ships with a DVI-to-mini-DVI cable. However, all the high end Nvidia Quadro cards have full sized DVI sockets, not mini. There is no mini DVI socket on the monitor, so the cable it comes with is useless if you bought a Quadro P1000 or higher. So I had to buy a new DVI to DVI cable. Lost a night of work because of this.
- The driver CD that ships with the monitor doesn't contain the pallet master software. Just download it right?? No... BENQ had an outage last night and so I could not download the pallet master software to verify the calibration and lost another night of work. It's back up today so I was able to download it.
- While I was doing that, saw there was a more recent monitor driver dated 2-5-2018. The one installed is dated 5-5-2017, so I obviously wanted to update. I downloaded the file and discovered it was packed in RAR format. Now kids, I am a huge nerd going way back, but my rar days are over. Luckily my little brother is still a huge nerd and unpacked it for me so i didn't have to download some shady unpacker. I install the driver and guess what? It's the exact same one as the existing one 5-5-2017. It's mislabeled on the BENQ website. I open the INF to very and sure enough. It's v1.0.0.0. So that was 15 minutes ill never get back. Thanks BENQ for wasting more of my time.
- In general, BENQs website performs well if you live in 1994. It's hosted in Taiwan. RTT to the site is over 200ms. My guess is that BENQ sells a few items in the US, so it might be nice to go ahead and drop a replica of the site over here. That, and hire just one native English speaker to proof your copy. Thanks.
- That calibration report. Yeah there is one, but you will need an electron microscope to read it. The issue is, they have enough content to fill an 8.5x14 sheet of paper but decided to print it on 8.5x11.
Summary
Good thing BENQ know how to build monitors, because they are not good at anything else. Wait, they shipped me a stuck pixel... so I'll rephrase: They're pretty good at building monitors that look great, except for a pixel or two, and light bleed, and they are not good at much else. With BENQ, it's death by a thousand cuts. For the price, I'm still a buy recommendation, but just barely. My advice is to buy this product from amazon so that you can send it back for any reason. BENQ's dead pixel policy would not cover my situation."
3 "This monitor will show burn-in and ghosting in a matter of minutes. I am on my third replacement and each and every one have had the exact same problem. I'm editing in Lightroom, or watching a movie, and as soon as I close it, I can literally read the text burnt in to the black background. Save your money or buy a better product. As you can see in the screenshot I paused on a black screen for a movie but I Can still see all the movies I was browsing, burnt in to the screen. Eventually they do go away but are replaced by other burnt in objects depending on what is being displayed for any length of time."
4 "Looked great -- but it is beginning the descent into what made me replace my Apple Cinema. A two inch smudge has appeared in the center of the screen. And likely it will just get worse and worse. My experience tells me I will tolerate this for a year or so and finally be forced to replace this monitor. Of course I need a monitor on a daily basis so I will not return this one. But I am quite disappointed. What I get for buying an unknown brand, I had never seen in use."
5 "Owned for less than 6 months. Turn it on one day and a big stripe running down monitor. I send it back and BenQ claims physical damage and won’t cover under warranty. This is ridiculous as the monitor stayed on my desk and never dropped or touched. Never again will I purchase a BenQ product. "
6 "After ignoring small issues like ghosting and some small areas of backlight bleed, 2 years and 10 months later this monitor simply died. I thought that buying a well known brand name and a rather expensive monitor, I would get more than 3 years of use out of this.
I don't have money to throw away so replacing a high end monitor every 2-3 years just isn't a reality for me. If you have money to burn then this may not be a problem for you. Needing resolution at a minimum of 2k with 99% Adobe RBG is something I have to have for my work.
On the face of this need, the monitor did provide this. While it lasted the color was really nice and the resolution was crisp. I was hoping to be able to have this for at least 5 years maybe even more. The monitor simply flashes on and off nonstop. It was working just fine yesterday but when I woke up today it just stopped working without warning. It's not the power, nor DP cable. I have tested many different cables and checked all drivers. The monitor will flash on and off even when the the cable is not connected and shows full power.
At this time I don't have the money to replace it with the specs that this monitor has. I am very hesitant at giving BenQ anymore of my business for products that can't last more than a couple of years. I assumed that a "professional" grade monitor would have an adequate lifespan. Some of us artist are very lucky to be able to get a high end product once and a while but it's devastating when they break for no reason and far too soon."
7 "The monitor arrived Friday, from Friday to Sunday I must have calibrated this thing 20 times using Palette Master software and DataColor Spyder 5 Colorimeter. It FAILED calibration every single time. My screen had a reddish tint and the picture looked horrible. I spent the ENTIRE weekend coming up with these results.
Once Monday came around, I decided to call BenQ because $2200 was wayyy too much to spend on a monitor that displays HORRIBLY. I talked to a super patient individual named Josh who was SUPER helpful. Basically he said if you are running two monitors, detach the other monitor during initial calibration. Also, do not use USB-C connection as that can carry video and audio and communicate thru the monitor / desktop, instead, use the data transmission cable provided by BenQ for connection and use your own DisplayPort Cable as BenQ does not provide male to male DisplayPort cables. BenQ provides all other cables except those. Once I followed his directions my monitor actually passed the Calibration!!!! I was ecstatic.
The picture looks ALOT better, but it is nowhere near stunning as I see on Youtube or on BenQ website or as others profess. It actually looks dull. I don't know if it's because my eyes aren't trained to view fine accurate colors but I've seen a lot better displays on $200 monitors."
8 "*update* I normally do not update my reviews but I felt it was justified on this one. This monitor is a complete waste of money. I would not recommend it at all. To go along with the issues in the original review, others have popped up. First, the screen goes black for several seconds from time to time. I originally thought it may have been the displayport cable I was using but it does it with HDMI as well. Next, the screen has gotten several groups of pixels that are way brighter to the point of being almost white when compared to the ones around them. Finally, the screen uniformity has gotten worse with use. My cheap dell monitor was a much better value and was way more durable. This will be the last BenQ for me."
9 " The screen was littered with dead pixels when I got it out of the box and plugged it in. Not just one or two, but a whole starry night’s worth of them. I’ve asked for a replacement and will update my review if I encounter the same issue with the next one. "
10 " I am a photographer and I need a monitor with Adobe RGB color support, 10bit and HDR function. So I brought Benq SW270C monitor. When it works, the color looks fantastic, the panel uniformity is perfect. However, it’s USB-C port and DisplayPort connection always gave the error “ no signal detected”. Every time I power it up, it gave this error about 90% time, another 10% it works. When this error happens, my Mac book pro computer shown the SW270C was connected as 2nd monitor, but the monitor itself gave the “no signal detected” error. But the HDMI port works OK, however it does not provide 10bit color. I just read through reviews, it seems many customers had this kind of issue. I believe it is a firmware bug. I hope Benq can fix it."
11 " I tried two of these and wound up returning both due to screen uniformity issues with light/white backgrounds. I tend to split my screen into left and right hand applications (Photoshop and browser mostly). The first monitor had a 7" wide x 5" tall, kidney shaped "hot spot" on the right hand side of the screen where light/white backgrounds were much warmer then the rest of the screen, it started mid way down the screen and went almost to the bottom of the screen. The second monitor had two smaller "hot spots" on the left hand side of the screen, again with light/white backgrounds - one near the upper left corner and another starting mid-way down the screen going towards the bottom. Perhaps these monitors are better suited for true dark room work with hood attached and the brightness cranked way down OR I happened to receive two duds. Either way, I can't justify the purchase."
12 " I purchased this a year ago and only just now learned that this is not a true 10-bit IPS panel but is in fact using the cheaper 8-bit + FRC technology. If BenQ were honest and upfront about this that would br fine, but the fact that this is mentioned in none of their marketing materials and spec sheets is borderline fraud. I paid a premium for a 10-bit monitor and that’s what I expected to receive. In day to day use this panel has served me well, very well in fact, but it’s the principle of the matter that leaves me feeling that I was misled, and to some extent ripped off."
13 "This monitor seemed like a top notch pick all around according to endless reivews all over the place, but the first one I got had a dead red pixel in the upper right part of the screen and noticable backlight bleed in two places.
Its replacement had much less noticable backlight bleeding, but a dead pixel in the lower right part of the screen. I am currently waiting for the third one, but don't have high hopes.
For a monitor aimed specifically at graphics and color professionals, any such flaws are absolutely unacceptable. Work on your quality control, BenQ."
14 " This product is complete garbage. I am about to have to send it in to get serviced for the second time in THREE MONTHS!!!! Just like last time, it is claiming that it is not detecting a signal from my computer. And just like last time, it is screwing up a freelance job I am working on, and I will more then likely lose my client over this! Not to mention-if you use Photoshop for too long on this, the screen starts to flicker incessantly and often creates a temporary red cast on the photo. Call me crazy, but a monitor meant for photography workflow should....ya know.....work with Photoshop?? I don't think that's an unreasonable request."
15 "I bought this monitor about 3 weeks ago. It worked fine for the first 2 weeks. I use it for retouching photos and liked that it had Adobe RGB for printing which I was working on a project that would be printed on displays. Also like you can switch to sRGB for web use which I had another project specifically for web advertising I was retouching for.
The puck is convenient too to switch between color modes. The image quality is great as well as colors.
The problem came about 1 week ago in the middle of retouching a photo the monitor went black and said "No Signal Detected". I spent the past week troubleshooting (which delayed my project for my client being able to be complete). And nothing works. The monitor is defective. I hooked it up to both my Macbook Pro and PC which it previously worked fine with both and no longer will connect. Tried various different cords in every possible port and still no connection. I select from the menu the type of connection and it still says "No Signal Detected." Will be sending this back and expect the next one to be in working order. I need this for work. "
16 "Waiting for the third replacement. First package came in a ripped and damaged box with a scratch on the monitor holder. The second was delivered with a heavy dent on the box, I did not even open it. I am not going to use a such expensive equipment that came in damaged package. Waiting for the third replacement..."
17 "I bought this for alleged compatibility with Mac products. 2018 15" MBPro with upgraded graphics card would not work properly with this monitor. Brand new 13" with state of the art M1 processor would not work properly with this monitor. All of the product instructions and manuals are overly geared towards windows users. Perhaps BenQ thinks photographers are all on windows machines and not macs?"
18 "I am a photographer and needed a new monitor. Given the good reviews this product received on line I purchased it. It came very nicely packaged but it was downhill from there. It comes with a "factory" color calibration sheet with shows it passed but I could not ever get it to pass the calibration with the Palette Master Software which was enclosed with the unit. I used my x-rite calibrator (which the software recognized with no problem) and the monitor repeatedly failed. I uninstalled the software several times to no avail. I tried to email customer support and did not get an answer for a week.( It was useless at any rate when I got it.) I called the US number but the tech who answered the phone knew nothing about calibration and the expert was unavailable that day. After several days of calling I spoke with Sean LeBlanc who was helpful but ultimately deferred to Taiwan where their calibration expert was on vacation.
In the interim I returned my first unit and received another with the same results. I purchased a new x-rite pro calibrator (hoping to eliminate that as a problem) and the new monitor failed on their own calibration software and then it locked up during calibration with a washed out screen. In the interim Sun Yi replied from Taiwan " It is strange that both displays are failing calibration. How did you have everything connected? Did you have the USB properly connected to the monitor?... I’m not saying you’re unlucky but for that to happen to you with 2 different monitors is highly unlikely.I apologize if it seems like a simple solution but that would be the first line of questioning in regards to connection issues or failed calibrations."
I then returned the second monitor. I would skip wasting time this company completely."
19 "really wanted to like this because I love love the puck feature... but it simply did not deliver enough color accuracy out of the box to warrant the price and clunky build of the monitor. the color profiles appeared strikingly off from my already color calibrated 4k monitor. the mac setting looked nothing like my mac screen..."
20 "The monitor arrived and would not calibrate via the included Palete Master software using a verified and recognized Spyder 5. After many tries I called BenQ support, which was very good by the way - quick to respond and understood Photography - they had me run some tests and said that unit needed to be returned as it had a hardware defect. Interesting that I could get it profile almost perfect with the Spyder software (just not the BenQ software) but I was suspect about the hardware and at this price point wanted it to work right. I returned it to Amazon. I can not say enough good things about the support department and the professionalism of the staff."
21 " The only visual display on the monitor was No Cable Connected. Even after I tried 3 different HDMI and 2 DP cables, switched to a second computer and retried the cables I received the same results. I still feel BenQ can produce a great monitor and may give them another chance but a different model."
22 "The quality build is good. However, it does not retain corrected color for extended periods -reverting to a greenish hue after only minutes of use and even after calibration using a Spyder X Pro as well as Palette Master Element."
23 "Its a great monitor, the best color rendition I've ever seen .
Unfortunately the monitor came defective, it has a small light bleed in the lower edge. I am still waiting to get a replacement from Amazon."
24 "When using the monitor with displayport connection, this display frequently goes to black for one or two sec, and then goes back to normal
no such issue when using hdmi
Have changed 4 dp cables, two of them are vesa certificated
also, have done updated the graphic card driver and the vbios, but the issue still remains.
The displayport 1.4 will be the only way on this monitor to get in a 4K 10bit RGB signal, and it has such annoying bugs. So I'd say, don't buy this monitor."
25 "The monitor could not be connected to a laptop with USB-C connectors. An unstable connection, lasting a few mintues, was achieved through help with BenQ tech support. Then the connection died. After another call with BenQ, I was advised the monitor was broken and that it should be returned to the seller. In addition, the cable connection documentation was difficult to deceipher."
26 "This monitor has a great color accuracy and quality but the image retention is beyond anything I have ever seen. I work in VFX and if I have to walk away from my desk I need to turn off the monitor otherwise the image retention is unbearable. I would not recommend this monitor to professionals."
27 " I was really looking forward to this monitor for my photo work. Unfortunately, it arrived with the DVI port loose and unable to detect a signal. After way too much tech support contact, I finally decided to return it. Looking at the one star comments here - and based on the tech guys' comments, this isn't unusual for the BenQ. A shame."
28 "I did a lot of research on this before purchasing, but apparently not enough. It's been a constant headache and currently just an expensive paperweight. It never connects to my MacBook Pro without difficulty. Continuing not reading a signal or my cables. Had it for less than six months and have used it for about two. Looking for a replacement because I'm so tired of fighting with it."
29 "calibration tool they insist on using is awful and full of bugs. also does not work well with MAC/ OS system and ADOBE at all~ complete nightmare"
30 " It was a great monitor, but then stopped working about a month after purchase. Almost 3 weeks after I put in a warranty claim, I still don't have a working monitor. EXTREMELY poor customer service from BenQ."
31 "hmm the screen is amazing. in build, in looks, in specs, i love it i want to keep it BUT... the magic word 'uniformity' that keeps popping up in every review for this screen. you get a good one or a bad one. my screen is literally split in the middle - left side is too orange, right side is blue-ish. you put a white background across the screen and you see it and it's sad. now i have to pack the screen, send it back and break my head if i should order another one hoping for a better result or just give up... hmm, i envy you guys who got a good model"
32 "I ordered this monitor and after calibrating I noticed a severe difference in color from left to right across the screen, left side being much warmer than the right. I contacted BenQ and they advised me to replace it with a new one, which i did. The second monitor had the same issue, very noticeable color inconsistency from left to right. As a professional photographer, I cannot rely on a monitor like this, so I am returning the second one also."
33 "I fell for the hype and high ratings everyone seems to give these monitors. Unfortunately the color uniformity issues are too severe for me, and from what I'm seeing from the discerning color folks this is just part of QC issues with Benq lineup. Like others I have color shifting magenta on the left, though some patchiness across the whole of the monitor is noticeable as well. Was hoping by now you could get a good panel without dropping a 1k+ but that doesn't seem to be a reality at this size. Compared to a higher end NEC I own (7 years old now) it's pretty remarkable the panel quality difference. I'll probably be heading back to NEC, just have to save up a bit longer."
34 "Shameful. Light leaks and terrible vignetting, can barely see anything from the varying tones in the screen. Returning as soon as i have time.
35 " Defective. The monitor I received failed the calibration tests, had a reddish cast over the left half and glowing dead pixels in the center. BenQ CS was - too say it mildly - not helpful. Returned!
Guh...I'm so depressed... I truly was excited to get this monitor after putting hours into research for a good monitor for photo retouching purposes... just to be sorely whole heartedly disappointed."
36 "Panel suffers from light leak and disturbs color accuracy."
37 "I don't recommend this monitor. The connections are very loose so the cables fall out if you barely bump it, it doesn't seem to hold calibration and the time switching between resolutions is ridiculous. I spend half my day waiting for it to swap back and forth. I wasted a LOT of money on this :( "
38 "Built a new PC for photo editing and was looking for a good entry level photo monitor since I've been using monitors not specifically made for photography. This one seemed to fit what I was looking for, but unfortunately after receiving the initial monitor and its replacement, it's left me disappointed.
The first one had a stand that would lean millimeters higher on the left at resting position. It also had a very apparent uniformity problem where the left side of the screen was warmer/redder than the right side. It wasn't a drastic jump but a smooth gradient from warm on the left to cool on the right. The uniformity problem's common from what I read from other reviewers so it wasn't very shocking to me. The stand, on the other hand is a new problem and can be quite distracting. I'm in the process of returning this one and ordered a replacement.
Now the second monitor, which was sold as "new" and was factory sealed with the "BENQ" branded packing tape was far from being new... There were handfuls of red flags that include: missing protective film from most of the product; mispackaged accessories and wires; multiple defects like wear and tear, fingerprints, carpet fibers, and scuff marks all over the product; and a bonus USB-C cable that doesn't even come with the monitor! This monitor also exhibits a noticeable uniformity problem where the edges are miscolored with the rest of the monitor. It's more noticeable on the left side than on the right. I'm not surprised though seeing that this was a used monitor being sold as new. Honestly, I don't know who's at fault here, the seller that Amazon got the monitor from or BenQ. The packaging was sealed with the official "BENQ" packing tape so I'm inclined to say BenQ.
I almost never write reviews but this experience has been such a great disappointment that I feel others need to be warned about what they are getting into. Uniformity is crucial when it comes to a monitor for photography so I'm surprised that BenQ couldn't get it right with this one. Even though I have a calibrator I didn't have to use it to see the problems; they can be seen with the naked eye. The whole "new" issue is a whole other dilemma... I will be returning the second monitor and I hope to get in contact with BenQ for a replacement that fixes the issues I had with the previous two and is actually a brand new item. If the problems still persist after the third try, I will look for another monitor."
39 "Thought I would get an upgraded monitor to sit alongside my older Dell unit. Can't really use the Adobe RGB mode as the colors appear real out of whack. Never could get a decent calibration with my iDisplay Pro and never on the Benq included calibration software. When I use the sRGB mode it looks just like my Dell monitor. But that's the issue. I hoped that it would be better, not just as good. Should have spend the money on the newer Dell monitor."
40 "The monitor arrived without the drivers or calibration software. After some searching (Ben-Q's site is pretty poor), I found the calibration software, but there are no drivers available for download. The calibration software cannot work without the drivers.
Also, after unpacking the monitor, I noticed the right edge of the panel (screen) didn't quite meet flush with the frame. I assumed it was by design, but after plugging everything in and turning it on, I noticed a strong blue color bleed along the entire right edge of the screen. That prompted me to inspect the other edges of the panel, and I noticed that only the top edge and the bottom corners meet flush with the frame, with the right edge being the most prominent. The screen seems to be slightly curved due to the uneven mounting, but to be fair I don't have sufficient knowledge to say for certain if it is the cause of the strong blue bleed.
Even though I've only been using the monitor for about an hour, the experience has been exceptionally inadequate. I will call BenQ tomorrow and update the review with their response to these issues.
Edit: I haven't had the chance to call yet, but I spent tonight getting measurements so I can substantiate my claims. I had to go through some hoops to find and install the drivers. The software is pretty bare-bones, but it does offer more (choice of white point) and fewer (can't calibrate other than native settings; only max 113 colors) options than the Dell 2413 calibration software at work. I noticed a warm-to-cool gradient, and I decided to do a series of uniformity measurements.
Edit 2: After calling BenQ, they suggested that I exchange via Amazon. Will update after I get the replacement up.
Edit 3: I ended up sending the replacement back. It had a stuck green pixel (that UDPixel couldn't remove), and similar uniformity flaws (albeit lesser). New screenshots of uniformity tests up as well. I changed the tolerance for more articulate graphs."
41 "When I first received this monitor, I noticed a perceptible lack of uniformity, and IPS bleed.
After trying 3 different monitors from 3 different companies, one good thing I can say about this monitor, was it has the deepest blacks I've seen so far, nice contrast, but is it worth the extra money over an ASUS or ViewSonic? No.
Why not? Customer service is a mix of bad and non-existent. Don't take my word for it, read about it on the Better Business Bureau. Their accreditation was revoked August 2019, and they have a D- rating. They cancelled their relationship with TrustPilot as well, a sales person told me, due to "fake reviews".
While I had this monitor, there was no support at all. No response to emails after a week. No phone line.
They claimed it was a temporary 1-2 week labor shortage, but a quick search on archive.org showed they shut down 5 weeks prior. Good luck using your warranty when you cannot reach them at all."
42 "The internals may be able to process 10bit, but the panel themselves are 8bit. So the monitor dithers, or uses FRC, to get a simulated 10bit look.
If the specs and advertising were more honest from all monitor companies, maybe BenQ would be too. As is, I think most of the companies try to work in a wording loophole to get people to pay for "10bit", when they are getting 8bit.
Not singling out BenQ, but this is allegedly fraud. Cannot find the spec for the panel any where on the internet, but asked the company directly, and they gave me the information hesitantly over the phone. This is an industry wide problem."
43 " I was using this monitor for 1 week, but I had to get rid of it due to its severe uniformity issues. My advice: buy a different brand!"
44 "Do not buy this brand. You cannot reach anyone for troubleshooting or customer service as they do not respond to emails and have shut down their call centers, it is literally impossible to trouble shoot or get any service at all!
Completely disappointed in this company and if they're having issues with staffing to the point that they cannot provide assistance with their products, then they shouldn't be selling these products.
This is just not a good product or company!"
45 "The manufacturer claims this to be a 10-Bit Color Display. It is actually a 8 bit +FRC monitor. It's using a cheap 8 bit color panel."
46 "I am not impressed with this monitor. We couldn't get the picture to stop jumping, so we contacted tech support - twice. They were not able to help, so they concluded it must be defective. They want this one returned to send a new one. Have you ever tried to repackage a monitor you have unpacked?"
47 "Pros: absolutely superb image, beautiful colors, good construction, really well packaged.
Cons: poor quality control: I’m returning the first one because it had various hot pixels in the top center of the screen, but I’m also hoping that the second one comes in a brand new state because the one I returned looked slightly used and that was the second reason for returning it. I’ll update as soon as I get other because THEY DONT OFFER YOU A REPLACEMENT, you have to send it back and then wait for the refund and just by that moment you’ll be able to buy another one. Tech support for this product is a shame! they keep you waiting for a response that never comes… I mean this isn’t a cheap monitor. They even make you wait until they have the monitor so you can have your money back. "
Would you spend $2000 on a product with reviews like these? If it was 1 or 2 bad reviews, I wouldn't think too much of it, but 47 bad reviews?
