Got the Nikkor Z 105mm macro

Well I got the 105mm Z Nikon and I have to say I'm a little letdown for overall sharpness. It's barely better than my TT Artisan 100mm 2.8 (the recent one). Maybe 5% sharper.

Better color and contrast by default on the Nikon but if it's a pure sharpness comparison it's not really much better at all. There does't seem to be anything wrong with the Nikon. The TT Artisan is a lot of lens for the price, but it's full manual. Chinese lenses are not playing around these days. Nikon on the left, TTartisan on the right at 1:1. Once corrected the TT artisan is extremely close. I'll be keeping both, the TT for the 2:1 and the Nikon for autofocus/weather sealing and focus stacking. It leaves me seriously wondering about the Tamron 90mm though.

I guess it makes sense as Nikon and the TT Artisan are made in China. The TT artisan just doesn't have the bells and whistles but optically it's excellent. $300 vs $850.

How did things look/compare in the corners?

I used a 100mm Tokina macro for years. It was very sharp but it also struggled to find a focus. I acquired the 105 Z a few months ago and find it to be razor sharp. I’m old school and got into photography before there was autofocus. When it comes to macro photography, I have the best results using a tripod and focusing manually. Focus stacking adds another level of fun to macro photography. I’m still learning the best way to utilize it.

@Steve has a focus stacking video course in the store on this site. It answered a lot of questions for me that the manual left out.

I have the AFS 105G and find it razor sharp. It's my #1 copy lens at any size. It will take tele extenders and extension tubes.
