I wanted to include the details in the subject line but it was too long, apologies.
My late father used a Mac, not sure which one. He had an external drive, usb , that he saved photos to. I have the drive, but not the computer. I thought I might get lucky but my pc won't recognize the drive. Not really surprized. I'm thinking I'll need to find someone with a mac in order to move the photos onto something that a pc can read.
Any advice is appreciated, I've never danced in the world of mac.

When you find someone with a Mac which should not be hard, make sure that the drive you copy them to is formatted in exFat. The Mac can do that very easily. That way both computers(Mac& pc) can read them. Here is a link to some other alternatives. https://www.minitool.com/data-recovery/read-mac-formatted-drive-windows.html

Paragon software makes drivers for Windows to read Mac APFS and HFS+ formatted drives. I used these in the opposite direction. They also make one for Macs to read NTFS formatted drives.
