I Have A Dilemma To Sell Or Not To Sell?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Although my friend uses digital cameras he is a very analogue person having his fights even with things like ebay so I offered him support for selling his gear during or after fully changing to Z. The frustrating conclusion was, that he kept clinging on his old stuff for purely nostalgic and emotional reasons and lost at least 3-4 k$ just due to waiting too long.

IMHO whatever you haven't used for a certain period of time and you can't clearly see a use case rising for re-activating it, sell it !
It is not only that you are taking the risk of loosing money, there is also the aspect of lots of people out there that love spending time with photography but are on a budget. They rely on people selling their stuff second hand, that has been appreciated and carefully used for quite some years and despite not being "hip" or "state-of-the-art" any more are still too good for "hybernating" or"rotting away" in a drawer, a shelf or a cupboard.

I agree that was me as well although in my defense I didn’t have the funds at first to do a full upgrade and wanted a spare body and lens. But once you are used to the z system the dslr feels like a dinosaur. I used my old d850 once and I didn’t miss what it could offer. I loved that camera for many years.

This getting old lark is a bit rubbish so I’m looking to reduce the weight of gear I lug about here there and everywhere.

I currently have a mixture of the Z system camera / lenses and DSLR camera / F-mount lenses. I’m happy where I’m at with the Z system lenses and the Z9 and are wondering if I should part with the D500 and my beloved, but now very heavy, 300mm f2.8 VR II.

My head is telling me to sell both with a view to getting a 2nd (Z6III) body to complement the Z9 and the sentimental side says keep them.

Both the 300mm and D500 are in great order but are now under used due to the weight issue, I haven’t really used them much over the last 12 months or so but are reminded of just how good the 300mm is on the occasions I do take it for a spin. It was my first real big piece of quality glass and I’m really in two minds as to sell or not.

I think I know what I’m likely to do but was just curious of anybody here has had a similar dilemma and what decision they in the made in the end.
Date the camera marry the glass (as Steve says )

Sell the D500

Yes the 300 F2.8 is spectacular, i have one and love it.

As we say use it or loose it.

You need to just be committed to use it often or sell it.

I take my 300 F2.8 out on a mono pod, hang it over my shoulder, i do have a thick curtain cord lashing attached to the lens and mono pod for security, the outcomes are worth every moment in carrying it.

I do have policy, if i don't use something in 6 months it goes on a wire shelf, if its not used in 12 months its simply sold or given away.

Thanks everbody for responding its all been both really insightful and helpful. Its weird how difficult getting rid of “stuff” can be 🤪🙄

Anyway decision made, going to sell and commit fully to the Z system certainly for my main bird photography hobby. I will still hold on to a couple of F lenses for the rare occasions I do macro and astro landscape but the D500, 300mm and TC’s Im moving on

Weighing up their useage over the last few years I just came to the conclusion that sadly they were going to be gathering more dust than light going forward.

Hopefully someone will get the same enjoyment out of them than I have done.

Again thanks everyone appericiate it. 👍👍

I sold all my Canon gear and most of my older Nikon gear and added three new lenses to my Z collection.
The older Nikon lenses work great so I kept the most expensive ones: 200 f2, 500 f4, 200-400 f4, 500 f5.6 PF and the all important 11 mm fisheye.

Selling older gear as you have - is near giving it away price at this time and getting worse. My suggestion to everyone is to buy the current products, try to get away from the older used gear. Sorry for being blunt, it is what it is.
18 months ago I sold a low mileage D6 in 100% perfect condition and full package at 3600 dollars, now I would be very lucky to get 3 grand.

I know it’s crap but as you say it is what it its. I'm comfortable with the decision I’ve made so time to move on.

Mirrorless cameras are for what I do so superior and I’m now seeing things like 500mm f4 glass goi for under 3k. I certainly didn’t make a killing on my used gear but everything I sold has a newer and better replacement in the z line. If the f mount 300 Nikon f2.8 weren’t so heavy I would be tempted but not at 6.4 pounds.

Out of all lenses DSLR or mirror less many people love and respect the 300 3.8 VR II and wish they had one.
I love mine and overcome dealing with the weight using a mono pod, the weight is the only compromise other than that its a 100% perfect lens delivering natural engaging non clinical photos. The other stunner is the 200 F2, its a keeper for many that have it.
Sadly the prices used for many DSLR primes have crashed, no surprise. I sold my D5 and 600 F4 lens years ago now, for some reason the 300 F2.8 is still in my kit as is my D850.

The 300 2.8 was the Ferrari of lens formulations, Nikon used the formula from this lens to build the design for other lens for over 40 years. So Nikon told me.

The closest thing in lighter smaller Z lenses is the 400 F4.5, it is optically amazing and has far less size and weight.

If Nikon brings out the Z 300 F2.8 version it wont be cheap, i think the current 400 F2.8 TC version is spectacular just of the planet on pricing.

The advantages of ML bodies and the superiority of Z glass are just too great and have destroyed the previous value of DSLR’s and F mount glass.

Yep - some dealers won't take F-mount gear in trade due to the over-supply glut that doesn't sell much.

About a year ago I took my D500 and F-mount glass to large local dealer. I was told they weren't taking F-mount gear not even from their store employees.

Steve warned me last year to sell asap for this reason. I do not have the 300f2.8 or the 200f2 and if you are on a support system I’m sure they are great. I have seen the 300f2.8 for 3.5k recently used. But it is too heavy for me in how I like to shoot. I do have the 400f4.5 and it is my best low light option for now.
