Is the Nikon Z5II as good as the D500?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Also as a longtime D500 user, as good as the Z6III autofocus, burst rate and other areas of performance might be, it's not a D500 replacement. As you and others have previously commented, ergonomics matter. The Z6III's enthusiast interface and feature set are deal-breakers for many D500 shooters. It's also not an APS-C body, which a true mirrorless D500 would be.
They already make a great D500 replacement that has the same pixel density and a similar sized body
It is called a Z8 and is incredible value because you get the bonus of a FX sensor and all the other huge improvements a stacked MILC brings to the table. Not to mention you don’t have to stare at a postage stamp sized OVF on the D500😉

Yes, the Z8 is the closest camera Nikon has to a D500 replacement; the Z9 if an MB-D17 grip has been welded to your D500 since day one.

The Z50ii may not be as ell made as the D500.
But it has some advantages...🦘
Might not be quite as weather sealed…but comparing the specs they’re pretty close and the Z will certainly have better AF since it’s newer and Moore’s Law and all that. Like another reply…outside of price, and once inflation is taken into account the price isn’t that far off…the Z8 is the mythical mirrorless D500..and the AF is way better. I have to admit…the EVF took a bit of getting used to compared to the OVF…but optically they’re pretty close and the much more info display and zooming in and all makes me not really miss the OVF.
