Giants Castle, Drakensberg
Altitude: foreground ~1500 m; background 3315 m
Looking south.

  • Camera Location: On the left edge there is a dark green patch of vegetation marking the reserve's rest camp. That is where Jen and I were enjoying an afternoon cup of rooibos (red bush) tea when we spied the reebok, pursued by the jackal, on the opposite side of the Bushman's River.
  • Chase Location: Near the centre of the photo there is a large boulder that has tumbled down from the cliffs. The prey and pursuer were heading towards this—across the valley slope from our left to our right.
The backdrop is Giants Castle (3315 metres), part of southern Africa's Great Escarpment. To the west (beyond the right edge of this photo) is the enclaved country of Lesotho which is encircled by South Africa.

When you live in the city during the year and find yourself in this type of landscape during the holidays, then you take into consideration the vastness of nature and that there are still, fortunately, magical places like this one. I have several in mind, particularly during visits to Namibia.
Thanks for sharing ;)
