Male Brimstone butterfly fueling up on nectar in the Picos Mountains in Northern Spain 18/07/16. The Brimstone is suspected to be the species on which the name "butterfly" - or "butter-coloured fly" - is actually based. Quite common in most of Europe, an adult can live for more than a year due to its prolonged winter hibernation period. Thus it has one of the longest lifespans of any European butterfly.
