This scene, although taken around sunset, epitomises the lyric in Percy French's 1896 song "where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea". They are made of granite and are the highest mountains in Northern Ireland, with Slieve Donard the tallest at 850 metres. They are situated in the Province's south eastern corner and on the other side, the republic of Ireland starts. The sea they "sweep" into is the Irish sea.
