My Favorite Lens

I've never used it. I have the Micro Nikkor 55, Tokina 100 and Micro Nikkor 200. I may get the Z 105 though. I love that the Z9 adds VR to the 200, but I don't get AF.
Do you use AF much for macro shots? A lot of macro shooters don't, either using an AF lens sert to manual focusing or using a manual focus only lens, and employ a rail for macro shots.

I have a few too many favourites:
Definitely 58 f1.4G aka the NeoNoct [however I've yet to try the 105 F1.4E ]

Both Zeiss Distagon UW primes - 15 f2.8AIP and 21 f2.8AIP

70-200 f2.8E FL;

400 f2.8E FL;

800 f6.3S PF

In my limited experience, I'm also impressed with the 40 f2 Z. This is a bargain.

And fyi here's a recent Working Review of the 50 f1.2S

Interesting,

Yes i found the 58mm 1.4 G to be unique more so when on the D850 with printed images, I really love it but not the price.

To me it seems almost like a totally revamped 60mm F2.8 Macro lens dropped to 1.4 with 2mm shaved off and the macro element removed.

I found that comparing the MTF charts and other design specs such as CA, Transmission, Distortion, sharpness etc that the cheaply priced 60mm F2.8 Macro and ridiculously overpriced 58mm 1.4 G are almost identical in lens design tech specs, 1.4 versus 2.8 is the only real difference but not an issue for me as 1.4 is often to shallow especially for portraiture.
I mean their retailinmg 50mm 1.8 lenses for under $200, and 50mm focal range lenses are one of the cheapest lenses to make.

The Noct Market.........I feel There has been a profitable Noct market established by Leica, selling a 50mm for $20k with back orders !, is this market area tangible or more a status symbol, in a world where margin is sanity and volume is insanity.
Hey if you can get it why not.

The lens from days gone by that i find incredibly sharp and extremely underrated for astro, landscapes and general creative photography is the 16mm 2.8 fish eye, designed with a 180 degree field of view and madly sharp, learn to drive this lens and wow the results are impressive, i find it sharp from my tows to the horizon.

Only an opinion

58 SLIIS was here in less than 24 hours!? Quick and easy win over the Helios! I can't wait to really put this to use. The colors this thing puts out are on a level
Voigtländer 58mm is incredible lens!! Going through my photos I always experience a WOW when I see a picture shoot with it! Excellent resolution, rendering! And did you notice how it renders the blue? You need to go and shoot landscapes with it.
I have the other Voigtländer - 40/1,2 on old Sony A7R and I must say I've never seen such gorgeous 3D-effect! Never! And I have a few Zeiss lenses! The combinaion A7R+Voigt. makes from pictures paintings from 19th century. Really. I am serious.

Voigtländer is known for its vibrant colors by the way. It is from Cosina, where also Zeiss was/is produced. But of course, it has some "failures" like field curvature and focus breathing.

Often the failures (not corrected stuff) make the character of the lens.

From my experience field curvature brings more 3D, less glass elements - more colours. But maybe I am wrong. My Nikon 180/2.8 brings just unbelievable colours. Nobody believes that colours come from the camera+lens ;-) and often ask me: did you saturated it? :D

I have also a collection of vintage lenses. Three of Heios 44 (on one I reversed the front element), Helios 77-4, 40-2, Porst. Takumar and almost all of Meyer Optik Görlitz.

I tested and found out that Zeiss Milvus 135/2 has more resolution than Nikon S 70-200/2.8. Milvus is now my reference lens for sharpness and resolution.
Sigmas have normally very beautiful Bokeh, better than Nikon (F-Mount).

Each lens also has its own dynamic range for exposure. For example, I can recover a lot from lights and shadows from Milvus 135/2 in comparison to Sigma 135/1.8 in post-processing. It must not be like that, right? Dynamic range shall depend on the camera/sensor and not on the lens. But on practice I can recover more from Zeiss and Nikon than from Sigma (middle focal lenght and wide-angle).

My favourite lens was the 105 Micro F2.8 G right up until I bought the Z 105M F2.8 macro. The Z series is a much better macro lens. However, as much as I like it for macro photos it is not my new favourite because even though it has many good optical qualities, it is SSLLOOOOWWWWW and not the first lens I reach for for portraits. The old 105 was a dual purpose lens, this one is only almost a dual purpose lens.
I am now without a favourite non- wildlife lens. Perhaps my budget for 2023 will stretch to a fabulous new lens. Perhaps I will turn out to be:
  • The Z series replacement for my 70-200 F2.8G lens
  • The Z series 85mm F1.8
  • A second hand 105 F1.4
I would love it to be the Z 24-70 F2.8 but alas the price keeps it out of my grasp especially with the F4 24-700 Z series. I would prefer the extra stop and better optics. There is not much wrong with the F4 optically but I still don’t like the twist to open feature much.

Absolutely. I would never use LR lens correction with any of these type lenses. I reserve that for the boring modern stuff.

You find the Z 105 slower than the F 105 for autofocus? I found the opposite, on my Z6 and Z9.

The issue I have with the Z 105 as a general purpose lens is that it doesn’t have an AF limiter setting for “far”. It’s a huge oversight that makes a really nice lens occasionally infuriating, when it hunts.

I have a Z 85/1.8, and it’s a great lens. You might want to wait for the 85/1.2 announcement and see if you can pick a 1.8 up from someone upgrading. For that matter, prices on the 85/1.4 and 105/1.4 should also drop when the 85/1.2 is released….

Sweet shot! I've always loved having a nifty fifty on my cam -- certainly for portrait work but also for walk around street photography (tho my 35 gives it competition for that task). Broke my heart when the switch to the D6 (and then Z9) that my old 50 1.4 D lens would no longer AF. So I went from one of Nikon's cheapest (and great) lenses to the simply amazing z 50 1.2 Dang it's a beauty; leaves me without a 50 for portrait work on the D6, however. hmmmmm, guess I'll have to manual focus :) I've also got the z 35 2.8 (another sweet lens!). But my 105 2.8 VR (f mount) -- which replaced my old 105 no VR, which also does not AF on the new cams) is always in my bag when the wildlife lenses are on the cam -- reached for it when I came upon the frogs last weekend.
