Need guidance: Multiple subjects in the same focus plane

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Multiple subjects NOT in the same focus plane:
  • front bird (right) : 5 metres from camera
  • rear bird (left) : 5.75 metres from camera
  • corner of room : 6.5 metres
  • f/5.7 = no possibility of having both birds in focus unless one knows a few tricks…

That test setup also illustrates that there is a camera position where both eyes would intersect the plane of sharp focus, but as in the field one would have to move the camera to find it.

I try to keep it simple. I have had very similar encounters with terns this past fall I basically try to get them on a flat plane from the lens and stop down a bit. If they are the same distance from the camera I would set my focus point on the bird I consider the most important. I usually use a small focus box for this to reduce the focus shifting unexpectedly. I dont think it really matters which focus box you use so long as the birds are the same distance from you and you can get a good focus lock. I usually keep eye detection on and wait for the birds to position themselves in a pleasing way.

Anyone ever try a tilt or tilt-shift lens to shift the plane of focus on critter images?

Not generally used for wildlife as I believe the focal lengths are probably too short - but...

I think you need at least 300mm for these types of shots and double that is better. The birds often tend to be skittish and don’t like you trying to get too close. A 100-400mm zoom is also a great option.

DOF overview, backgrounds

Watching Steve's video clip on 3 tricks for better wild life shots seems to validate that so much of the better outcomes is from using the right lighting and technique.
Collectively some great tips in the use of time light and speed from especially the right position.

Enjoyable.
