I have started shooting with this lens and it is actually better than the AF-S 28-300mm lens in most respects. It is shorter and lighter than the 28-300mm lens which is quite an accomplishment. It only 3.2 ounces and only 1 inch longer than the 24-120mm lens for a point of reference. The 28-300mm was f/5.6 at focal lengths greater than 105mm. These are the apertures with the different amounts of zoom with the 28-400mm lens. In most situations it will be at f/6.3 or f/8 aperture and background blurring may be an issue.
f/4 28mm
f/4.5 35mm
f/5.6 60mm
f/6.3 105mm
f/8 200mm
Overall a great lens for travel and street photography with its zoom range and with its being a lot less conspicuous than a 70-200mm lens. I need to further evaluate its focus breathing myself. The 28-300mm was considered to have considerable focus breathing but nonetheless it was a favorite of pro wildlife videographers on a budget.
