I was just reading that. Sounds like it is going to be an impressive camera. I am hoping that the new AF features listed make there way to the Sept firmware update to the Z7ii.
Unfortunately, I think one spec isn’t going to work for me; the price 😔
The 45 megapixel is fine, the biggest factor is going to be AF. Many, myself included, are waiting to see the AF before venturing off or continuing with Nikon. If the Z9 AF doesn't beat out Sony or Canon I don't see many people buying a Z9 and the new Z glass when it comes out. Canon will still have a R1 eventually but Nikon Z9 will be it for many years. It's now or never.

I 100% agree with you. 45MP is perfect, the look and layout of the camera is nice. It will use dual CFexpress cards which is great but it will all come down to the AF system. If it is a swing and a miss Nikon is screwed. I have got to believe Nikon knows this and there are examples from other brands what the expectation is from a pro body. Come on Nikon I am rooting for you!

I was just asking for timeline clarity on another thread and we got this:

The official announcement is expected in the next 2 months, but do not expect many cameras to ship before the end of the year. Because of part shortage, the waiting time for the Z9 is expected to be very long.

That has the merit of being clear. And talking to my own supply chain folks, they see major tightness in components lasting through end of June 2022 at the earliest (and that assumes no massive disruption from a new variant). So Christmas 2022 availability for us poor non-NPS by-standers?

As expected the developing spec list says Nikon is making the Z9 into a statement and the price is aligned with that - in absolute it is a high price but it's not out of line based on where it will compete. I wish there was a bit more info on the AF overall but I can't imagine they'd have anything below state of the art in a camera with that spec list, we'll just have to wait till the next list of leaks.

I just don't know that I want to wait another year + to put my hands on one.

If Nikon can ship the Z9 to all but a few people by the end of 2021 I will be impressed. This isn't being negative towards Nikon. As you mentioned supply chain with your folks I am on weekly calls about supply chain as it impacts my business unit. We are not necessarily seeing production delays beyond a few weeks which in the big picture isn't a big deal. The real problem is the extended time and cost of shipping products from Asia. We used to produce a product, transfer to the ocean freight docks and in 1 week it was on a boat headed to Long Beach CA. That would take a couple of weeks in transit and another week from Long Beach into the US distribution centers. So from time of order to landed in USA was about 70 days for us. In todays world product gets to the ocean freight dock and can sit for weeks to several months. Then when it gets to Long Beach we are seeing delays going into weeks for that freight to be offloaded and then moved out of the port. We are now at around 6 months up from 70 days! The cost of freight has gone up hundreds if not thousands of % all in. Currently there are additional ocean freight delays because of Christmas inventory coming to the USA.

So with all of that said if Nikon hasn't built the camera and shipped it by now I wouldn't expect it to be readily available by the end of the year. They could air freight them but even that is taking a month or more rather than a couple of weeks (air freight isn't over night when you are talking containers, it is weeks).

Seeing it at the Olympics is promising but I would expect more February unless what we saw at the Olympics is the final form and function of all parts. Firmware can be delayed and have the consumer update it at purchase. I would also note that Nikon fiscal year is April I believe. This would put a new product launch at either the end of their fiscal year or start of a new year if it drops in numbers in April. I suspect other things beyond finances will likely dictate this but depending on their financial it could sway them to push for boost to this years financials or hold it for next years.

Time will tell but all manufactures are stuck with the reality of todays lead times.

Wait WHATTT??????? - The Z9 will be capable of up to 120 fps in a lower res file size (6Mb I think). Some reports even indicated 160 fps!
I take that to be its video rate, not its still photo rate. IOW, its video camera will be capable of shooting high frame rates to support slow motion playback.

Well said. Our production delays are a bit longer than you describe at least on some key components but I can 100% relate to sea containers sitting for months - if Nikon want to ship some Z9s to the US by year end they will need to air freight and THAT is the ultimate gouging of all times right now.

I also thought so until i read the term " Low res file size (6MB)" being mentioned there....i was also thinking maybe its a screen grab from videos...It will amazing if they have a 30 FPS at full res and then variable increased FPS with lower res...like 40 FPS in crop mode and so on and so forth...

what difference does $25-50 shipping make to a $6-7000 camera?

When you are selling tens of thousands of them globally it is a lot of money! I suspect like many things Nikon doesn't make much at all on the cameras. Lenses and accessories like a $400 grip and a $100 plus battery and a $400 charger, that is where they make money. Canon and Epson likely lose money on every printer, but then they got you on paper and ink.

So, many are acting as though the Z9 will initially be a partial disappointment upon release; i.e., What if the AF isn't good enough?, What if the frame rate is too slow?, etc.

But what happens if Nikon really puts it all together in a near-perfect package and actually surpasses the competition? Couple that with the Z glass getting such high reviews, and what then happens?

They will sell a **** load of them which is the opposite of if they fall short of expectations.

Frankly they bring it upon themselves. They show pics with no specs which leads to rampant speculation. Canon did the same thing and now people are bummed out it’s only 24MP. In contrast Sony announced the a1 with no one even knowing it was coming and set the bar as to which many cameras are being measured. Let’s hope Nikon sets the new bar.
