clearly Nimi knows a lot more about lens design than i ever will, but i, too, am unclear why one would say it’s the same design. perhaps same approach, but do we have any reason to think it would make any sense for nikon to use a tamron design here?

You can't design a from-scratch lens in one year, let alone a cine zoom (parfocal). So what Canon, for example did when they moved to the RF mount is rebodied existing photo and cine lenses to give us the CN-R family of lenses. I cannot find a lens with these specs and dimensions except the old Sony/Tammy.

I haven't designed lenses in many years, but the approach has always been to look at existing proven design and improve on it and retain as much as the physical layout of buttons, dials, etc the same to save on tooling costs. That's what I see when I look at this lens. I'm actually skeptical about putting an ED glass so close to the sensor, but that's just me.

It's academic. It'll be a good, inexpensive kit lens that some people will love. I'm looking forward to seeing reviews from impartial users and I'll borrow one to test it for myself.

With the info I have, if someone asked for advice on what zoom to use on their Nikon, I'd suggest the 24-120s or if the can live with less range, the 2.8s. I can tell you as a video shooter that powerzoom is a gimmick. The other 'cine features' are superficial and can easily be accomplished with any photo lens.

It looks cool though.
