Nikon’s New Lens Tech is a Danger to Medical Devices

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

You can find similar warnings for cell phones and smart watches if you look. This is a potential issue that all should be aware of if using pacemakers and certain other implanted electronic devices these days. Risk is low, but greater than zero.

The problem is with the pacemakers which only recently has the medical establishment realized were highly susceptible to interference. The FDA issued a warning in August of 2021 about people with pacemakers being around iPhones. As usual it is considered not to be a problem until it is a problem and the bodies start to pile up.

The problem with pacemakers even extends to things like brush cutters, string trimmers, hedgers.....things in reasonable proximity to the device

Is it possible that Nikon's Silky Swift 'motors' can have more of an impact on one's pacemaker than a smart phone?
Don't cross at the 'red' is not a saying or law developed by lawyers to prevent lawsuits..but sound 'advice' to keep one safe.
Kudos to Nikon.

The magnet can trip the magnetic switch in pacemakers to enter diagnostic mode.

It has nothing to do with magnetic fields per say.

They may have strong magnets inside the lens, so if you hold it against your chest while you're moving it (or hugging it from excitement after it comes in on order) there could very well be a problem with it flipping the switch on the pacemaker which will then flip back once the magnet is moved away.

Most people who comment have no understanding of what they're talking about, so you end up with a lot of useless information in posts from people making comments about cell phones or magnetic fields without understanding the underlying reason for the warning.
