Tried to part exchange the lens at WEX.

They just got back saying the manual focus ring is “gritty”

Any ideas on repair costs?

I would talk to Fixation. They are good and cheaper than Nikon

+1 for Fixation. If you are in the North IIRC they have a place up there or Johnson's in Glasgow are also authorised repairers

Found Advanced Camera Services locally. They gave a very reasonable estimate for repair and service. Comes with a transferable 6 month warranty. Could help on eBay.

When I visited his website yesterday after reading your post it says he is retired but still doing existing work, so it has to be very recent.
