Nikon 600mm F/4 E FL front glass issue

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I live in Israel- they have a local Nikon authorized lab here.
Well, chances are 50/50 - maybe the store will have it back (they have a very good reputation )
Or
I will have to take care of the lens myself....
In the case they will agree to take it back and refund me, do you think it's the best choice or maybe keep the lens and send it myself to Nikon ?
If you have done a thorough check, the sharpness is good all across the frame, vr and af all work and the only issue is the loose front element, then why not? Nikon shouldn't charge more than a few hundred $$ (US) to check it out and tighten the front element. Choice is yours, there are many of them out there and I think more coming as the 180-600 gets out. I shot the 180-600 a couple of days ago and am very impressed with the sharpness of a less than $2k zoom!

Really?! Would you trade a 600mm F/4 E for a 180-600 z ?
Yes, all other parameters looks good, is there a way to look at a photo and tell if there is a problem with sharpness etc. ?

Well, I've still have my 600E and it's not going anywhere anytime soon, but the 180-600 is quite impressive. For checking sharpness you really need a proper target with very precise set up and control of as many variables as possible. When mine came back from service a few months ago, I set up my target and then looked at the shots at 100% on a 24" monitor. I do my tests indoors to eliminate heat waves.
