@MatthewK surely you're not suggesting that fiddling with all the bells/whistles isn't as fun as just shooting photos? Say it ain't so. I was just about to pull the trigger on a 600TC. Now you're making me wonder...
It’s the tradeoff for having a 600 f/4 and 840 f/5.6 in one lens, I suppose. Unfortunately, it’s more ‘stuff’ in between you and the actual act of making a photo. Keep in mind I was shooting quick, constantly moving warblers in complicated environments, where the lighter weight 600PF and no monopod would have been much easier to maneuver; for slower paced shooting: nothing to worry about, buy the 600TC with confidence, it’s amazing.

After renting a 600 f6.3 from Lensrentals, I’m selling my 180-600 and making the switch. My 186 is sharp (a good copy) and I like its images, but it’s just too much for my old bod to handhold for long. I’d prefer to get a Nikon refurbished one, but there aren’t any up right now. Of course, a competitively priced used one from KEH or MPB might work, too. Does anyone remember what Nikon’s price for one was the last time they were on the refurbished site?

Typically Nikon Store new retail sale prices are less than every day prices of their refurbs. The only time I've ever bought refurbs is during the frequent 10 percent off sales. Occasionally specific refurb items get heavily discounted. For example a few months ago refurb 500mm PF was going for super low prices. Like half of new retail. But generally speaking it's not a huge discount below new retail. Particularly considering you only get a 90 warranty vs one year with new stuff.

Last sale was 3799 for a new one and I saw them at one point for 3199 refurb with a 10 percent off refurb sale. I dint think we will see those prices again any time soon on this lens as it’s made in china and popular so there may not be that much existing US inventory left. If you can get a used one at kEH and you want one I would pull the trigger

It's that time of the year in the Northern California foothills... the lizards are running around like crazy! This lens is fun for capturing activity of small creatures in the back yard.

And collecting materials for the nest...

There's something funny with the Rhododendron leaves that I'm not happy about...weird blurry/shadowy transition from leaf tips to background. Wonder if it's the lens or what could I do to improve this???

In LOVE with my 600PF and Z8 combo. I find the lens ultra fast to focus and incredibly sharp- it resolves great detail in any kind of light! I also find the control ring extremely useful (in low sensitivity mode) for changing ISO on the fly. I never thought I’d find a more enjoyable lens than the 500PF but Nikon has hit it out of the park with this one! Sharing a few of my favourite images:
