Phil,

Glad you pointed that out. The f-mount 1.4X TC adds 6.7oz and the FTZ II adds 4.2oz. which puts the weight of the adapted, 1.4X teleconverted 500 f/5.6 at 61.9oz. -- only ~22oz lighter than the Z800PF f/6.3. When mounted on a Z-body, the 500PF then functions as a 700mm f/8 lens, giving up 100mm of reach and ⅔ stop of light, when compared to the Z800PF. I would also toss in the point that the Z800PF works very well with the Z1.4X TC, giving you 1120mm at f/9 -- only ⅓ stop dimmer than the teleconverted 500PF at 700mm f/8.

I tried a Z800PF out at a store today. I only used it for a few minutes and took some test shots. The weight isn’t that noticeable to me, but while the size difference didn’t bother me I noticed it much more. The bokeh is much better but not surprisingly the depth of field is much narrower. I’m looking forward to trying it out tomorrow morning since I went ahead and bought one.

Congratulations on the 800PF! I visited your SmugMug site and based on the number of raptor photos I saw, I'm certain you'll enjoy using it. Nice work!

The modifications I've added to my 800PF include Zemlin lens cap and 2-piece hood, and a Wimberley Arca-Swiss foot. When traveling, I pack the disassembled/nested 2-piece hood into checked luggage.

Thanks for your comments and recommendations. I ordered the Zemlin lens cap a few days ago. It was supposed to arrive yesterday but it looks Monday now. I was going to order a Kirk foot and try the hood before getting a replacement.

You're welcome! Glad to be some help. The Kirk foot looks like it's probably friendlier to the hand than the Wimberley.
