Nikon AF-S TC-14E II or III

I've never used the TC-14E II. I do use the TC-14E III. Some folks believe the TC-14E III is sharper than the 14E II, and it's also been mentioned that the TC-14E III works better with lenses with electronic apertures.

I believe it also depends to some extent on the camera - mirrorless vs DSLR. Based on what people have reported it seems that a teleconverter works better on a mirrorless camera, and especially in lower light. DSLR's cannot focus accurately consistently when the maximum apertrure is smaller than F/8. Mirrorless cameras can still focus accurately at smaller apertures. A photographer I know of often posts good mages on another photography forum that he makes with a Z6II and TC-20E III and 500mm PF lens. His minimum aperture in those instances is F/11. That would not really be feasible with a DSLR.

Way back I asked Thom simply,

TC 1.4 II or TC 1.4 III which one is better.

TC III

My self I haven't spent time testing but when i do look up into the sky through the trees with both TCs hand held, the III seems to show a little more clarity and doesn't have this slight purple colour cast.

At the coal face shooting i cant pick the difference so far, i guess i need to use the D850 and 70-200 FL with both TCs side by side first but i cant see the benefit doing so.

However there is a noticeable difference between the TC 2X II and TC 2X III that i have experienced, .............sharpness and focusing..
I do find the the Tcs work better on a D4s D5 D6 as apposed to a D810 D800 D850

As to the Tcs for the Z, i have no experience yet, man they are expensive for what they are, i feel the price is another means of indirectly adding margin on lenses, the price i see it as a rip off simply because they can.

Only an opinion
