Well, I think I've just found out what my dream speedlight would be - ProPhoto A10. What a piece of kit that is.....Steven was right. But the cost.....UK price equal to $1,212! Not pensioner-practical.....but wow would it solve all my problems.

I recently saw a YT video that compared several speedlights and the Prophoto one didn't do very well.

"In this video, we compare the flagship speedlights for Sony, Canon, and Nikon and put them through a range of tests. Surprisingly, the best on-camera flashes ended up being the most affordable Neewer and Godox lights"

It is quite comprehensive testing:

After extensive testing with my Nikon Z8 and Godox AD200 Pro/Pro II flashes (in manual power mode) triggered by the X Pro II, I can consistently shoot at 1/640 without any banding while completely eliminating ambient light. This shutter speed works perfectly with both flash models. However, I recommend doing your own testing at various shutter speeds since setups and needs can differ. Important: Always review your test shots on a computer monitor - the camera's LCD isn't reliable enough for checking banding issues.

Forgive me for posting a thread that may appear to have been 'done to death', but I'm looking for a speedlight that will do microbanding-free exposures at up to 1/8000th sec.

This was so simple to do using a dslr, and I have a stack of SB800s; but of course, they don't work correctly above 1/200th without a mech shutter.

Grays of Westminster (Nikon specialists over here in the UK) say that the SB910 'should' work band-free on the Z9, but I can't find anyone who can back that up!

I've tried asking Godox UK if any of their lights - including the AD200 - will work without the narrow light/dark line flaws at 1/4000th to 1/8000th; but I've now been waiting two weeks for them to get back to me.

The attached Barn Owl is on the Z9 at 1/200th with 3 SB800's all at 1/32nd power fully manual. Shot was done in a blacked out studio, with a very weak light on the post so the Barny could see where it was going!

But I am needing to use HSS as a fill light for shooting very small birds in flight outdoors.

So, is anyone managing to get flawless HSS images at 1/4000th or faster with their Z9/8 using speedlights?

Thank you in advance!
Banding is a common HSS problem - so I avoid it.
It can also be caused by the lighting.
The other option to HSS is hypersync where the flash produces an enormous long flash to avoid banding - loses freeze factor.
Mostly I just stick to the sync speed, although my medium format cameras can sync to 4000 using a leaf shutter ... 🦘
