DON'T TRY TO KEEP UP, Love what you have and if that's the D850 even better
Absolutely the D850 is the best all round DSLR, i feel it will be very much sort after in the used market by people not wanting to invest in expensive new gear, frankly i am a hybrid version of those very same people. Yes i have a Z9 and so far love it..........but I will not invest in mirror less further till i see how it will tangibly improve my photography not my emotions.
If you have a D850 all ready its pointless having a Z7 II as far as image quality is concerned, only my opinion.
If you don't have a D850 and are not doing sports action of any kind then yes the Z7II is smaller lighter.
As I have mentioned to some club member's who many are feeling they are being left behind in this technology race or revolution because they say they cant afford to keep up.............
..I say Don't try and keep up, love what you have and what you do, Look, a photo should be a photo not a documentary shot, or a record shot unless its your intention to be so, you can use anything for that matter..
A Photo ............It needs to tell a story, communicate a message, evoke an emotion, be technically usable or reasonably sound, and have a wow factor.
Note if, a photo is captured or composed in a strong compositional manner with a strong message it often over rules the lack of technical perfection.
A photo with out content is not a photo.
There is so much Brilliant DSLR gear becoming available on the used market, even lots of f4 mirror less lenses, and even some mirror less bodies.
If you look at some of the International wild life completions, spectacular shots breathtaking shots from all sorts of locations and people.
Winners were even using D4 D300 14-24, 28-300, 24-70, 24 120, D500, D700, D7100, D5 d6 1dx and the list is just of the older gear and mixed gear budget level included.
I wouldn't be getting disillusioned, worried, or pressured.
Invest in your self, you will get greater satisfaction as you create 80-90% of the result.

Do you think the shots will all look the same from these people, these photographers where all at 9 o'clock on the dial of the arena, so many had the latest expensive gear, they never moved all day, are they photographers or record shot takers ?
I was at 6 o'clock on the dial with a 180 degree view of the subjects coming out at 12 o'clock, plus i moved around the ring as needed keeping the light behind my back, they were half the time shooting into the sun or backs of heads.
More money then sense was my take away.
Only an example.
