Photo editing software

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I was curious if anyone has any suggestions for editing software.. I am a hobbyist and can't justify the expense of Lightroom. Currently I am using PhotoScape X pro and I like it but I just get a feeling I could do a little better. I have tried the Nikon NX Studio but find the Photoscape X does a little better. Suggestions?

I like DXO photolab. Powerful and easy to use. Or photoshop Elements with the third party add on called Elements Plus.

If you don't want to go the freeware route then Affinity would likely be your most valuable proposition. Right now, it's 50% off and an incredible bargain IMHO. Alternatively, you could look at elements.
That’s what I would recommend as well. And it’s more like a Photoshop clone and less “odd” than Gimp. I haven’t used Darktable in years but that is an interesting idea. I don’t use NX Studio often but would be curious why you find it inadequate @Cree Native

DXO Photolab 8 is a lot like lightroom in the sense that there are sliders for the adjustments organized into tabs. It would be worth the free trial. Elements is like lightroom and photoshop combined with a nice organizer. It doesn't have every feature of photoshop but the elements add on works around some of the limitations.

Curious why do you think LR/PS combo (Photo suite from Adobe) is too pricey. I could not determine where you live - name suggest native American (is this correct)?

Adobe photographic suite is $10/month (plus tax in Illinois) . Many other software packages are in the $50-85 range and don't include updates which will bring the annual cost up to the price of LR & PS.

I’m not sure if you’re using Apple or Windows but if you’re using a Mac, then Apple photos is a free editor and you can do some pretty extensive editing in there. That’s all I used to use before switching to Adobe many years ago.
I'd second this, apples editor really isn't half bad. The clean up tool they added worked at least as well as the Ai removal tool in Lightroom and it's free if you own a Mac.

Yeah, I just opened it up a few minutes ago and looked at it as a matter of fact and it’s pretty amazing what is in there now. They’ve added a lot since I have used it in the past. The desktop model is pretty extensive to be honest.

Thanks, I didn't know but if you want Layers, Brushes and more Photoshop type tools then Affinity Photo 2 is the way to go.

A further point is that it can use other tools to edit. For example you can send an image to affinity or topaz and have it come back so Photos becomes the image manager and your edits in other tools.

If you can’t or won’t go for the pretty cheap Adobe subscription…Affinity for processing…but then you lose the keywords and other things that LR provides. The sub is really inexpensive considering what you get.

Maybe you aren’t aware of what Lightroom can do for less than 2 Starbucks a month. If you consider that compared to others you might not call yourself a hobbiest. Not a criticism here, but to me at 9.99 month is the best subscription I have and maybe even the least expensive of all.

It is a good value but you need a very good internet connection. When I was on Hughes Satellite I had Adobe SHUT DOWN my use of Photoshop for 3 separate weekends which is why I Dumped Adobe. That won't happen with Affinity.

Adobe Customer Service is Nonexistent if you have problems.

Not all Adobe products require an internet connection to use them. Lightroom Classic and Photoshop download from the internet and are software that resides on a personal computer.

I use Photoscape X only for borders, I love the large choice of different borders and I do that sometimes for posting on the web. I think the program provides good access to processing images, better I think than Apple Photos, which I've also used. I use LrC, the desktop classic version, as my main processing software. It's hard to beat what Adobe offers for $9.99 a month, various versions of Lightroom and Photoshop, new fonts, access to AI and print and web design to name only a few. Plus it's hard to beat the organizational setup that Adobe offers through Lightroom Classic. I've used Affinity in the past and it was just like Photoshop, which can be daunting for some people. Luminar seemed pretty good when I used that software. You really need to get a list of available software and try it out, most offer a free trial period. I find Nikon NX to be clumsy and only use it for checking focus points as LrC does not offer that option.

Another vote for DxO Photolab or Affinity 2. Affinity is on sale at present and I suspect that DxO will have Black Friday pricing shortly.
One problem with Lightroom is that you are 'locked in' in the sense that if you stop subscribing, you can no longer edit any photos. This is not the case with either DxO or Affinity.
Good luck with your decision.

Yes and they run regular Security Checks. THEY CAN SHUT DOWN PHOTOSHOP AND LIGHTROOM ON YOUR COMPUTER, AT WILL, AND YOU CAN NOT STOP IT! Every time you open an adobe product it tries to find a connection and check with adobe for registration. If you turn off internet the program will run for a while but it keeps looking for that connection. Any question and the program shuts down.

I would agree with the Affinity recommendations, especially as they are on sale. But I would also suggest LR Mobile, which is $50/yr. USD. This comes with 100Gb of storage and you can use the apps on Android and iOS in addition to the web-based version of LR. It can give you a taste of the LR ecosystem if you have any interest in what it offers.

The masking in LR and generative fill in PS is alone worth the $10pm. Astounding software
