A male Northern cardinal - a commmon bird here in Kings Co., Nova Scotia, - my first shot on the morning of Jan. 1. Confession - I had to do a bit of cleaning up of the twigs that were encroaching onto the bird before saving. TFL.

Still a nice photo, glad you posted! I love seeing photos of birds from across the pond. We all have so many cool birds and I'm just amazed at the variety of birds all over the world.
Thank you! I'm always equally amazed by all the different birds I'm seeing from America when I'm mostly used to what I see here. It's definitely refreshing in a way also.

Thanks for posting here, Fiete! Your bird is similar to our Black-capped Chickadee, but prettier, I think! A very good way to start the year!
I can definitely see the similarities but I must admit that I really like the long-tailed tit, partly because of how chaotic they are. They're mostly moving in small groups, look incredibly cute and are just moving really fast. While they're usually not that shy, you can only really take photos of them for a very short time because they've already made their way past you in 20 seconds.

I realize this is the wildlife forum, but if I take the title literally, my very first photo is a landscape shot. Taken at 7:09am (before sunrise) on January 1, 2024 at Sweetwater Wetlands in Tucson. Camera JPEG with no adjustments other than downsizing.

Beautiful, Fred! (As for whether it is appropriate for this forum or not…I will let the admins decide…I’m not fussy!)
