Printing?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I’ve never seriously printed my images for other people, in this case family. I usually printed at Costco for some landscape and they came out fine.

However some of my wildlife images from my D5500 and z8 I think need a better printing than Costco.

Aside from local, what places if any do people recommend for printing? This doesn’t need to be museum/archival quality prints.

I may do face mounting or metal, but likely will do a print, frame/matt.

Size- likely a bit larger than 8 x 10 so as not to crop the print.

This is a learn as I go for me. More learning

The bay photo dream print on a standout mount is a nice lower cost option. It's, mounted on lightweight foam either 3/4 or 1.5 inch thick with the edges finished with wood or metal. A keyhole on back for hanging or looks nice on a picture stand on a shelf.

Thanks! Looks like a type of light weight face mounting!

It's adhered from behind. I think face mounting is literally that, as in an acrylic print where there is a transparent layer of adhesive on the face of the print bonding it to the back of the acrylic. Could be terminology differences. Those face mounted acrylics are very nice too and ready to hang.

Yes that’s correct on face mounting. Has to be down right so there are no air gaps between acrylic and print

They really make a huge difference vs frame/matte/glass

WHCC is excellent, although I now print my own. If I needed larger than 13x19 I'd go back to WHCC. I used others that were fine, but the overall quality, service, and options at WHCC got the nod.

Thanks!! I’ll be printing some of them for family, maybe 10 - 20 prints total. As the images are colorful animals I’ll want the images to POP!

Not sure I’m willing to invest in printing my own. I did that about 20 yrs ago for minor things

I've used MPIX quite a bit and I've been happy. I've had some printed on metal and they really stand out. They offer a discount on a first order and routinely run sales on different products including sometimes metal.

In case anyone was curious like was, here is what Staples.com quoted me here in California: $407.00 for one copy !!!

I’ve seen metal prints. Im Highly interested as they are light weight so easy to hang, and they seem to POP.

Anything you notice that’s a trade off with metal prints?

Any trade-offs? Yes, unwanted glare and a metallic sheen. I realize a lot of people like them and if it's your cup of tea, then fine, it's just not mine. Make sure you see a sample in person before you order one. (I think some labs offer an inexpensive sample kit).

I don't see any trade offs. They are indeed very light weight. MPIX offers a very broad range of sizes. I've selected the white base, glossy with a mounting easel. I haven't framed mine but I'm sure they look great framed and perhaps you don't need glass. They do indeed pop. If you go with metal let us know what you think and which options you chose. Enjoy!

Like anything else in the artistic realm, how you produce and display your prints is primarily a matter of taste. I've tried many different media (print/frame, metal, canvas, acrylic, etc.), and typically chose one depending upon the image itself (e.g. I'm especially fond of printing to good rag paper for B&W images, then framing in black wood gallery frames). Lately, I've become enamored with printing color wildlife images on acrylic, because I like the super definition of detail and great color rendition, which makes them really stand out or "pop".

As for where to have images printed, I like working with a local fine art printer because I'm able to examine the physical media before printing, chat with their professional staff about options, and get small "proofs" before printing in a larger format. I've tried a number of the big online photo printing services and while they mostly do a good job, I still prefer working locally for the reasons mentioned, plus if I'm not happy with the result I can have the image reprinted immediately, often at no or a nominal additional charge (one of the benefits of having a good working relationship). You might want to consider finding a good local printer yourself, if it's an option for you, and perhaps producing a couple of small format prints on different media, just to see what you like best, before going larger and having multiple copies made. Whichever way you decide to go, best of luck!
