Question about Steve's Focus Stacking Video Course

Steve explained the reason for including Helicon as an alternative. If you see the series again he was very thorough and explained why it is used. No offence, but as a visual person it stuck in my mind. Have I bought it no. I've only trialled it.
 
From what I see on the diagram, it looks more like a linear dng than a true raw dng file.
Anyway, this is maybe a "purist" question with no incidence for most people.

I think it would have to be linear, since they would have to have demosaiced to do the focus stacking. One can't stack raw files. Still it would be lossless, maybe an embedded tiff in the dng.
