Question about the Nikon 200-500mm VR

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I’m pretty sure I read or seen a recommendation from Steve on this topic on backcountry gallery ..its just been so long ago and I went with what he recommended for replacement foot. You might want to do a search ..not sure if it was a review...wish Nikon would have put a decent foot on to start with but it‘s a good lens.

Hello all -

I've been following this forum probably close to day 1, coming here after finding Steve's wonderful videos on YouTube. As RonG mentioned in another post and so many others commented, so great to have a forum of professional, like-minded people willing to share so much combined knowledge! I've learned a lot in the short time since the forum has started, and I thank you all!

Now on to my question. Over this past weekend I rented several lenses, one of them being the Nikon 200-500mm VR. I liked almost everything about the lens except...the tripod collar. It was not smooth at all. The knob needed to be loosened quite a few turns, and when rotating the orientation it was, for lack of a better term, ratchety. It was like it was catching on each of the little bosses on the lens that keep the collar in place. I even removed the collar to see if it was damaged or anything that would be causing this.

For those of you that own or have owned this lens, have you found the same thing? Or did I get an anomaly? Maybe because it was rented? Although other than that, it looked brand new. Of the three lenses I rented (Sigma 60-600, Nikon 500mm PF, and the 200-500) they all of course had strengths and weaknesses, but this would be a deal-breaker. It's a shame, the photo below was shot wide open at 480mm. I know it's less than perfect, there was a lot of brush between us, but I wasn't about to move since he had no idea I was there!

Thanks in advance!

I had the same issue and replaced the Nikon collar with a Kirk collar.

In this video he said he bought the Kirk. Go to 3:55. https://www.kirkphoto.com/lens-collar-for-nikon-200-500mm-f-5-6e-afs-ed-vr-2156.html

I replaced the original collar off the Nikon 200-500mm with the Really Right Stuff LC-A14-PKG Lens collar and foot package. Am very satisfied with it.

Thanks to all who responded, your help is greatly appreciated! Order for the 200-500 and the Kirk collar just placed through B&H. Can't wait!

I purchase the same thing for my lens but I'm finding that I can't rotate the foot to sit on the top of the lens when hand-holding. The lens collar is hitting the front of the prism finder on my D750. Other than that I'm really happy with it.
