Recommendations regarding CF Express Type B memory cards

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

OK now I'm going to go back up to the top and record all the insights everyone has provided, then juggle the info against the costs and see were I land. I would like to thank each of you for taking the time to offer you experience it is a huge help.

oh, random tidbits:

most cfe readers won’t read xqd cards and vice versa. there are some exceptions like the sony, but generally speaking it’s probably just easier to just move to cfe. generally speaking, if the card reader doesn’t say it reads both, assume it doesn’t

the sandisk extreme and lexar gold cfe-b cards are prone to overheating. just avoid

most performance oriented cards will perform very similar in the current nikon cameras

You’re going to get a variety of advice, but here’s mine.

Z9: Invest in CF Exepess cards of at least 325 Gb in capacity. I recommend Delkin Black or ProGrade Cobalt. They run cooler and have a reliable reputation. Get the newest gen. 4 cards if your budget allows.

Z6III: Same recommendation for CF Express cards. If you’re shooting 15-20 fps bursts in RAW, using the SD card for backup will throttle your ability to shoot continued bursts because of its very slow write speed. Get an SD card equal in capacity to the CFE card.

I have a Z9 and Z6III. On both cameras I use the 2nd card slot for overflow, not for backup. That’s a personal choice.

I don’t recommend use of XQD cards because of their slow write speed.

Enjoy your cameras!
JA I know what you are saying regarding the slower speeds of the XQD cards, but two points that stick with me a) at 400gb write speed for the XQD and 300gb write speed for SD cards, would that not make them a reasonable match? b) I had no buffer issues with my D5 camera's shooting with the XQD cards but here is what I don't know is how different the Z9 will eat up a card. Any thoughts

You've already received lots of great information and suggestions. However, as far as how fast your cards will fill up, one thing to keep in mind is that the D5 is 20.8 MPs, the Z6iii is 24MP, and the Z9 is 45ish MPs. When I moved to my Z9 from my 20MP D500, I was stunned at how quickly those cards filled up. I, also, am a bird and wildlife shooter and was also "old school" when it came to card sizes. Up until I bought my Z9, the largest card I ever considered using was 128GB. I now use 256 and 512GB cards in my Z9. I use slot 2 as back-up and that decreases my anxiety regarding card failures.

as far as i can tell, the time to write to two cards is how long it takes to write to each, then added together, not the lowest common denominator

that said, if it’s fast enough for you then it’s fine by definition

A Z9 shooting lossless compressed RAW (approx 55 mb) will be about 5900 images on a 325 Gb card. Shooting HE* RAW (approx 36 mb) will be about 9027 images on a 325 Gb card.

Compare this to the number of images you shoot on a typical outing.

Your Z9 can write to a CFE card at up to 800 MB/s. XQD cards will severely restrict write speed to the card. This will be very frustrating when shooting 20 fps bursts. As the camera’s write buffer fills, the camera will slow the fps rate and may stop altogether if you’re depressing the shutter button long enough.

Look for CFE cards with a “minimum sustained write speed” rating of at least 1200 MB/s. As I said, I recommend Delkin Black or ProGrade Cobalt, but there are other choices, too.

Good Morning I have made the transition to mirrorless finally I purchased both the Nikon Z6iii & the Z9. Starting with the Z6 iii, what size (capacity) would be recommended for the SD card slot if I only use it as back-up? My plan is to use my 64GB XQD cards with the Z6 iii mostly because of the expense of cards and the large investment I already have in the XQD cards but also since the Z6 iii backup SD card only reaches 300mb/sec. Regarding the Z9 I suspect the 4.0 Versions is recommended but not knowing how many GB's I need is troubling, I don't shoot video, I usually shoot mostly short bursts 15 - 20 shots @ a time so I truly could use your insights since I have only experience with the D5's. Is there one brand CFExpress Card recommended over another. P.S. I shoot wildlife and birds. Thanks in advance
Ray
Of the several brands of CFexpress card I use Delkin is the one i'm most comfortable with.
Transcend seem good - Although most CFe B cards are pretty reliable compared to SD.
Many of the new very cheap CFe B cards seem as slow as a SD card..🦘
