The third largest Fjiord in the Svalbard archipelago, it was named after a Dutch whaler who traded here in 1613. It is 52 miles long and has some stunning shoreline scenery along its length. These shots were taken in August when the snow and ice had largely melted. Hopefully new snowfall will start again at the end of September.
This is Janusfjellet, literally Mount Janus, standing about 1000 feet above sea level.
Here we see one of the many glaciers sweeping down to the shore, but sadly many of them have retreated out of sight due to climate warming. Svalbard is heating up 6 times faster than any other part of the Arctic !
This shot further along the Fjiord illustrates the point graphically --- 20 years ago this bare shoreline was covered by a glacier !
