Sigma may produce 200 f1.8 lens

In the past I've had too many technical issues with Sigma lenses. They worked fine, but after the while things went wrong.
I decided to stay with Nikon lenses and I've never regretted it.

Sigma makes superb prime lenses, particularly their Art series and Cinema primes. Outside of negligible “real world” differences in AF speed and IQ differences only noticeable to pixel peepers the better Sigma primes hold their own all day long against OEM primes. Throw price into the mix and they are a steal. You can have a problem with any piece of gear, camera body or lens but anyone who says the better Sigma primes are not built to extremely high quality standards is simply wrong. Owned a bunch of them, never a single issue. Not to mention their Cinema primes are held in VERY high regard in pro video circles. Owned high end OEM glass for Canon, Nikon and Sony going back decades but wouldn’t hesitate in the slightest to buy Sigma primes!

The big Canon 200mm primes were phenomenal if you were lucky enough to have had the pleasure to use them and an all time favorite of mine. Been hoping for a super fast modern 200mm prime for a long time so I hope this Sigma rumor is true.

Nikon sued Sigma for allegedly violating Nikon's VR patent in their OS system. Sigma and Nikon settled, and Sigma paid $14.5 million, or 15% of the profit earned on the lenses in question.

How much merit was there to the case? Who knows, but Sigma had to pay.
Nikon developed the VR technology and has the patents to prove it. For another company to seal their work is hardly commendable and why the patent systems exist around the world. An honest company can negotiate a license to use the technology developed by another company but people being what they are will cheat.

I have no insight into the case between Sigma and Nikon over VR. However, the patent system can also be misused. If you are curious dig into the issues with Red's raw video patent. A patent is supposed to be a novel solution to the problem, Red managed to basically patent how compression works applied to raw video and has held back the video industry for years if not over a decade at this point. Imagine if the first camera to compress an image basically stopped all other camera companies from making compressed images.

This YouTube channel has a deep dive into Reds Patents and some very interesting information about Red as a company:

One might even be able to argue the above YouTube channel is part of how Nikon ended up buying Red.

As for the rumored Sigma lens, I just wish Sony would remove the TC limitations for third party lenses. It's yet another lens that if it supported TC's would keep me at least partially in the E mount ecosystem. Doesn't Sony want camera body sales?

I would love a native 200 f 1.8 or f2.0 for Sony E-mount. When I was shooting Canon the 200 f2 was my favourite lens by far, when I moved to Sony I kept it and still use it with a Sigma adapter. The lens is such a unique lens.
