Silica Gel- how much- in the field?

If not Amazon has a pretty wide selection. I use these. Around 100g seems to work in most smallish places. I use 1500g in my gun safe.

WiseDry Desiccant

My preference in the indicating variety is blue to pink. I've had problems overcooking the orange to green stuff. Downside is blue to pink uses cobalt chloride. It's on the toxic side so don't ingest it.

edit. FYI: I put an 800g canister in my empty small lowepro backpack to keep the interior dry. In a house with a RH around 50% it takes well over 2 months to saturate.

Thank you- very helpful! I was going with the blue pink myself, remember it from eons ago

Limited internet access-

I have my z8 with a rented z100-400 lens. Out in the rainforest, developed a slight haze now. First time for me, didn’t happen with different gear last rainforest trip.

Took ten mins to get back to lodge.
I immediately switched out to a different lens, and to attempt to identify if the issue was the lens itself.
With the second lens, everything was fine, 5” later put back on the 100-400 and it was fine too.
I noticed a small rotation of both lenses when locked on the body maybe a few degrees. Never experienced this with my F mounts. Is this common with Z mounts?

Never needed to use silica gel for removing humidity.

1 How much silica gel should one use, and how long does it take?

2 Once water is removed, how do I identify what the problem is? I didn’t have this problem with my d5500 at all.

This is new territory for me.

Thanks in advance
Shot in a torrential downpour for several hours with the 100-400 in conjunction with a Nikon Z8. Just wiped it down with a towel.
The lens you rented has a worn mount. This is a normal occurrence. When I tested the Sony a9 mark 3 in conjunction with the 70-200 f2.8 GM mark 2, that one rotated to the point of shutting off. By a few degrees? A 3 degree deviation causes loss of contact. You probably have 1.2 to 1.5 degrees.
Calculate using the formula of 1 kg/m3. 1 kg of silica gel can absorb 700 grams of water. If the camera fits in a shoebox, you should take 3 bags of 20 grams each.
There is no way to disassemble. You can visually see if there are traces of liquid in the lens shaft, on the lens mount.

Thanks a lot!! I’m guessing on the rotation, I don’t carry a protractor with me 😉
Appreciate the formula!!

A worn mount- makes sense. I’ll see how the camera handles in terms of lens rotation with the kit lens, and my 186, which is new- so I would expect no rotation.

You're welcome! Glad to help :) Just don't purposely rotate the lens beyond the stop. It's not harmful, but if the lens is worn, it can scratch the contact pad.
