Sony 600mm f/4 in stock anywhere?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Hi Folks- Like some here I am transitioning from Nikon to Sony. Just curious if anyone knows if the Sony 600mm f/4 is in stock anywhere? I ordered one via B&H which was supposed to arrive end of Sept and am now told that it is delayed and I should expect "an update" by mid-to-late Nov. I called Bedford's and they said they won't have for another 3-4 months. Adorama, etc....similar story.

Any insights are appreciated. The 200-600 is great for the price but certainly no replacement for a 600 f/4...

I'd try smaller dealers - Roberts, Procam, Hunts, etc. When I got my 600 F/4 GM from Procam, it wasn't available anywhere online, but they go me one in less than a week.

Thanks, Steve. I called each one and seems to be a similar situation; Sony appears to be a couple months late on some major shipments from Japan. Seems to be COVID-related supply chain challenges, if I were to guess.

Are you selling any of your Nikon gear?

I can't speak for Mike, but I have a bunch of it I'm selling. I'm not switching or anything, just have too much that I don't use. I'll be putting it in the newsletter soon, but I have a D5, D810, D750, D7200, 14-24, and 24-70 for starters :)

Wouldn't it be easier to keep the gear, buy a 3D printer and make a second Steve?

Mike, I don’t know how Sony handles ‘grey import’? But if they are more flexible or if you don’t care or really in a hurry to get one the lens is widely available overhere.
Just let me know and I’ll post you some links.

My wife tells me that one of me is all the world can tolerate :)

Looks like I married your wifes soulsister Steve:ROFLMAO:

What’s the shutter count on the D850?
Apologies for the delay; shutter count on the D850 looks to be 41,958
Any prices on the equipment?
D850 (with Nikon grip, original battery with charger, D5 battery, third party charger, Kirk L-bracket): $2,400
24-70E VR: $1,250
70-200E FL VR: $1,350
Sigma 14mm f/1.8 (with Sigma dock): $1,100

All in excellent condition. I think I used the Sigma lens once. If interested please reach out directly.

Appreciate the heads up but think I will hold off on the import model route for now. From what I've read Sony is a little less rigid than Nikon, but definitely wouldn't be eligible for a warranty which at that price point I think I would want. Thanks again, though.

Try Allen's Camera (outside Philadelphia), ask for Brandon.
Have been shooting with the 600mm for about 10 months and have really enjoyed it.
Once you get it I would recommend registering as an Alpha member.

I was told the Sony 400mm and 600mm are made to order.
My 400mm took a little over 2 months about a year ago.

PS I decided that while 600mm is the price of admission to bird photography, the 400mm and TCs would be better value giving 3 focal lengths. Concluded that from the IQ of TC images published on the web.
In practice the 2x yields more soft shots handheld with BIF than I'm happy with.

I've heard a lot of people say the same thing about the 400mm lenses and TCs. Out of curiosity, which 400 - Sony?

Yes Steve.
Some of the static shots with the bare lens and the A7R III can be breathtaking, though the usual pairing is A9 and 1.4x TC.
This is interesting because the performance (IQ and AF speed/accuracy) of the 600mm with both the 1.4x and 2x TC's is supposed to be stellar, at least from what I have heard. I would have thought the same for the 400 f/2.8.

Steve, what has your experience been with the Sony 600 and TC's?

Thanks so much. I am actually in Central NJ and just a bit over an hour from them. I spoke with someone who said they just had one in stock but sold it! Now on backorder with no ETA.

Since you are close that is a great store to know. They are super to deal with, fair with trade ins and Brandon will do anything he can to help you. (I'm not paid to write that!)
Sorry you just missed it. If they know you want one, I think they are your best best at finding a 600mm.
BTW, I know it is a lot of money but it has , for me , been a joy to shoot with.
