Sony 600mm f/4 in stock anywhere?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

This is interesting because the performance (IQ and AF speed/accuracy) of the 600mm with both the 1.4x and 2x TC's is supposed to be stellar, at least from what I have heard. I would have thought the same for the 400 f/2.8.

Steve, what has your experience been with the Sony 600 and TC's?
There's obviously a lot of variables influencing lens and camera performance and comparing apples with apples isn't a simple task.
And double that when you start using a 42mp or 61mp sensor.

I am underwhelmed by Sony AF performance in general cp my D500 and have gone into it here: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1664839/0

I bought a A9 + 200-600 just recently to test the sony kit and my experience is the opposite of yours. The fact that the A9 allows for silent shoting got me a lot more keepers because wildlife in germany is very sensitive. I would have kept the D850 and D500 but the loud shutter scared wildlife too often. I sold the D850 and got a Z7. Tortured the Z7 + 500mm fl and myself some time trying to make it work but eventually i gave up.

Iam shoting the A9 as i shot with Nikon cameras not relying on trackingmodes and instead use flexible spot mostly. So far i am impressed with tracking and focus aquisition. In a perfect world i would mount the 500mm onto the sony but now i have to decide if i want to switch to sony or stay with nikon. I guess Steves tests and findings will influnce my decision :D

Thanks so much. I am actually in Central NJ and just a bit over an hour from them. I spoke with someone who said they just had one in stock but sold it! Now on backorder with no ETA.
Hi Mike D.
Where in Central NJ are you from? I’m from Howell?

I'm talking about AF performance, not field craft.

Hey Ralph, I'm in Bridgewater in Somerset county so not too far from you.

Update: Out of the blue I got an email from B&H today saying the 600 has shipped and I will receive tomorrow! Sometimes I just don't understand the inventory management process in this industry, but in this case I will not complain.

Cheers,
Mike

Not far at all. That’s great about the lens! Good Luck.

They're not an inventory item AFAIK.
