Very cool! I'm really looking forward seeing the new cameras. For my wife and I, what these cameras can do and how they compare will determine if we stay primarily Nikon shooters or if we start moving more to Sony as our primary outfits. (She already kind of has with her a7R4 - the Z6/7 just weren't getting the shots and she love the Sony stuff - the trick is she ALSO like the 500 PF a LOT.)

Here's a translation of what's on the page:

A page suggesting new products for the Z series of mirrorless cameras has been opened on the website of Nikon Imaging Japan Inc. There is a description that it is 21:00 on October 14th, Japan time, and considering the recent trends of each company, it seems that there will be some announcement at that timing.

The page title is "[THE NEXT CHAPTER] Z 7II, Z 6II", and the characters "-Z goes to a new frontier.-" Are also lined up.

The development of the Nikon Z 7 / Z 6 was announced on July 25, 2018 as a "full-size mirrorless camera with a new mount", and details were announced on August 23 by live distribution to the world. The Z 7 was released on September 28th and the Z 6 was released on November 23rd.

Agreed Steve.
Nikon are under big pressure to get out updated cameras to meet the expectations, which are set high.
However most photographers do not really need seriously high specs unless they shoot action/wildlife. But we can predict a mass emergence of trolls, however this new chapter unfolds in the Z system. Personally I am staying Nikon ;) I am quietly confident Nikon will get these vII models right, and the Z optics are already superb.

I agree that most photographers don't usually need the action capabilities some of these cameras bring to the table. Still I think the problem for Nikon is that when someone is buying a camera or buying into a system, they like the idea that they can shoot action and get great results if the need comes up. And I fear that not keeping up with the competition when it comes to action may hurt Nikon if they don't get this right.

The good news is that it looks like they are using dual processors and I think that's where things fell short on the original cameras. The thing is, in my opinion, Nikon's Z cameras have better ergonomics and controls than the Sony cameras do. That feeling may just be from years of using Nikon though! Still, there's no denying they have some of the best - if not the best - mirrorless lenses on the market. Plus, they have the PF lenses too :) Should be interesting to see what happens. :)

So Nikon started a teaser that the Z6 II and Z7 II are being announced on October 14th. That is pretty exciting news but I am curious what will it take for you to buy one or even upgrade from your current Z6 or Z7?

For me I have the Z6 and hardly ever use it. For me to buy another Nikon Z they would have to drastically improve on the EVF lag and have great animal eye af (not dogs and cats). If they can do that I will buy one, if not they won't give me anything I need.

I'll be getting one or both of the new ones for sure. Just the addition of a grip is enough to make me switch. I also am really hoping for noticeably improved AF, EVF, frame rate, and buffer. Rumor has it we'll get all of that and more. However, prior to the last announcement the Z7 sounded like a mirrorless D850 and it wasn't even close. So, I'm hoping for the best but braced for disappointment. Fingers crossed :)

I hope they do something similar to what they did with the D850 when it comes to the vertical grip..the ability to use D5 battery and improve the performance....like a proper 20FPS....Canon R5 has 20 FPS with a lot of foot notes on the battery % and Nikon can overcome that with a vertical grip like in the D850. Hoping for the best!

Steve, yes first on the list at a local store. They have multiple stores, I should get one of the first ones! Trying to decide if I should sell one of myD500's or wait....The D850 and Z6's are staying, for now

In my opinion, being informed is one thing, and always buying the latest technology / gear is another.
I would only consider the latter as being too gear-centric.
I like to stay updated (on technology and camera gear) but I still stick to my older Nikon gear, as it gets the job done (hence no need to upgrade).
Just a thought ;)

Agree, it will still be interesting to see what they come up with. Not that I would be interested in buying one of these, but the interesting question will be:
What will they try to sell as a revolutionalry new feature of the II series that they should have done right in the first place before anouncing the initial Z series just 2 years ago.

To me it looks like a ruinous and potentially fatal rat race is going on here - and this doesn't apply just to photography gear. Of course there was innovation and and marketing competion in the past as well. But these days priorities seem to become turned upside down. Doing anything that gives you more attention in "social" media, collecting likes there comes first and then comes the qualified opinions of those people that are really able to use more than 20% of the capabilities of a certain peace of equipment. All this has become more important than a companies's vision and long term strategy - providing there is one - , while their long term reputation is going down the drain.

As I said, this is by no means specific to cameras and lenses, it happens everywhere. Nikon belongs to Mitsubishi and I had the privilege to get insight of how they work in other domains of manufacturing high tech products. Against this background I am really wondering what happens in parts of Nikon ...

I also wonder if Sony may have the advantage given their long lenses for birds and wildlife (i.e., 200-600mm and 600mm f4), whereas Nikon's mirrorless lens roadmap does not seem to include a telephoto S-line Z lens?
I think Nikon will add them eventually. Sony has had years to bring out glass for their mirrorless cameras, Nikon is just getting to the 2 year mark and in that time has released, in my opinion, an impressive number of lenses - 16 lenses and two TCs by my count. Normally, if we get a 3-4 lenses a year from Nikon it's impressive. So, they do seem to be working on it. I'd bet we see a real telephoto prime within the next couple years and the 200-600 should be out next year. They're gettin' there :)

Steve, what is your experience/impression with Nikon's ftz adapter and the current Nikon DSLR long lenses?
It's just OK.

No drop in image quality. However, running the focus ring from minimum focus distance to infinity takes twice as long. For most subjects this isn't a huge issue since they are generally at a range that only need very slight focus ring movements. However, it is noticeable when you need to go from a close subject to a far one or when the lens hunts.

I'm hoping that maybe the extra processor in the Z6/7 MKii cameras will help with this. Since the Z cameras basically use the same batteries as most other Nikons, I don't think it's a voltage / amperage issue.

I am more interested in the native lens line up than the new Z cameras. We need a few macro and wildlife native Z lenses to complete the offerings.

Having the 300 pf and the 500 pf... I am at the same page... move to Sony without those lenses 🥴. And base on the Sony historic... (beta, mini CD, games, etc...) , I do note trust that Sony will stay in this industry if profits are not as expected...

That thought has crossed my mind as well, but I also think that it's a risk we take with any company. Heck, we don't even know for sure if Nikon will survive. Still, I have to agree with you on those PF lenses. They have become an essential part of my system and I sure wouldn't want to give them up!!

Same here, Steve, about the grip. I will get the Z6II because of the vertical grip. My hand cramps very badly when I hold the camera vertically for my sports shooting, particularly with the longer and heavy lenses attached. I need that new grip because of the AF-on and shutter release buttons. Kinda expensive to pay so much for a button, but it's just the price of staying current.
