The 800mm almost killed the D500.

I feel for you, I recently had a 500mm f4 lens jammed onto a D800E, I managed to save the lens but Nikon ended up cutting the D800 in to small parts all do to the locking pin snapping on the camera.
 
Its amazing how man have the crash and burn story.
Many years ago. I had a a 500mm f4 on a D1X (about $6000 back then) The camera was about a week old.
Tripped. dropped the camera and 500mm

Camera was crushed, the 500mm mount was bent
I did have insurance new camera and about $1000 repair on the lens (all this in 2002 maybe 2003)
