Lens caps - front and rear - are simply supply items. I lose 1-2 per year in the least convenient places. My most recent was two weeks ago in a horse pasture while photographing foxhunting. I normally carry spares in my camera bag - Z rear cap, camera body cap, and 77mm and 82mm lens caps.

Just like an airplane pilot uses a book with procedures so he/she doesn't forget anything, I follow a pattern for use, packing, etc. I always do it the same way (whatever your way is) and don't modify it. Place your lens cap in your same pocket (zippered part of camera bag etc.) all of the time.
I did lose a lens shade once, when I extended my camera outside of the helicopter window. I watched it float down into the Pacific Ocean. :-/

16 is the (current) limit. It looks like this is linked to the number of AirTags Apple is able to check every 15 minutes.
