Thinking of getting a lens suited for wildlife photography.

Another vote for the 180-600mm:
  • I like having the flexible focal range.
  • Performance-wise, it's amazing for what it is.
  • Weight over long walks can be managed with a sling or other body mount. While heavier than the 600mm prime, it's not that bad.

I'm going with the 150-500 Tamron for the portability after this trial. If I need 600 I'll put up with the Sigmas harder to use AF/VR. I think I'll end up taking a smaller lens with me more often.

If I didn't have the Sigma already I'd just get the 180-600, other than optics it's better in every other way by a large margin.

I highly suspect Tamron may drop in a surprise that usurps the 180-600 this year as well. Maybe a 300-800 or something like that will show up.

Here's same settings on the Sigma/Nikon and how close they look once run through post processing using the same settings. The Nikon's only optical advantage I've seen is f 6.3 is a very very small bit sharper. I used them at 500-600 mm for the most part this morning and will take them out again tomorrow but I think my minds made up.
