Upon Updating MacBook Pro to Sequoia 15.4 ... Nikon NEF images are no longer shown in Preview (single view)

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I have experienced the exact same issues as most and Nick B. In addition my DXO DNG files behave similarly.
And as also noted, pressing the space bar for a quick preview is not working either for all these same files.
Hopefully Nikon will fix this as it does get in my way.

Believe it an Apple MacOS issue not Nikon.

I know this isn't the answer most people will want to hear, but there is a system extension available in the Apple App Store that takes care of this. It’s called Camera RawX and it costs about $9.95 CAD (I think!).
I don't have any connection with Camera RawX other than as a user. I did purchase and install it, then all of my raw file preview issues went away, so for me it was worth the small investment. I just didn't want to wait while Apple and Nikon sorted this out, especially knowing that could take some time.

I just saw this and ran a test. I have updated to Safari 15.4.1. Opening with Preview works fine -- my NEF files are all lossless compressed. However, quicklook brings up an empty frame that never gets filled but if I grab the corner of the frame and resize it by a pixel or more, the contents appear. That definitely looks like a bug.
Is there a way to convert a Hi Efficiency raw file to the lossless compressed format so that you give up the extra disk space only to those images that get post processed?

Glad you brought this to my attention! Just bought, installed and it does show my Nikon NEF files in preview as it used to be. Same here, I didn't want to wait, bc it did slow down my workflow. Thanks!

I'm a little confused. I just read the specs and they specifically say that OS non supported RAW files will not open with Preview.
It seems to me that the ability to view a file in Finder is not the same as opening in Preview.
Whether highlighting the file and view in the sidebar or pressing the spacebar and viewing--is not Preview.
And this is what I am looking for that was removed with he OS upgrade.
While I do think Apple will provide a future fix..I do not think that they will add Nikon's HE*.
Therefore I am going to buy this for US $7.99. Family shareable with 6 devices.
Thanks for the great find.

Hi
this is not the solution to the problem
No one has suggested that it does. While I could wait for Apple to fix the problem; I do not think that even when done, the HE* files will be supported. And, more specifically, this temporary fix does not allow the files to opened with OS Preview. I only use this to assist my workflow when I have files in Finder.

FYI to the group. Sequoia update 15.5 now allows Nikon's Raw lossless to preview in finder and open in Preview as before. However, it does not recognize HE*. So while I was sure that this bug would be fixed, I am more than happy to have d/l Camera RawX to allow Finder 'Preview' of my HE* files. I have switched over to HE* since I can now easily incorporate in my workflow.

True but what is still broken even though stated support is Thumbnails for Z6iii.

I see that the Z6iii should have the same support at this time for Sequoia 15.5 as the Z8+++. But for Lossless only. You may need to do a reinstall of Sequoia to fix the problem. You can do this without affecting your current setup.
