The only image I ever got in South Africa of this beautiful owl. A unique characteristic of this bird is its pink eyelids.
This image was shot at dusk and the bird was far away, so lots of cropping was done here.

Beautiful bird , great shot Koos.
Thanks, Ira. I hope to be down in Florida again for a couple weeks in Jan-Feb. Looking forward to shooting there again. This time I hope to get up to Sebastian Inlet, and perhaps also the Everglades.

Nice one Rassie. Only ever seen a Verreaux’s Eagle Owl in captivity but even then the pink eyelids were incredibly striking. Must have been a great experience to catch up with one in the wild. 👏👏👏👏
Thanks, Gordon. That's why it pays to go on a guided safari. I saw this in South Africa, and also last March when we used the services of a guide in Costa Rica. Nothing escapes these guides. By myself I would not see half of the animals that the professional guides find.

On the day I made this image, we were on the afternoon game drive. The driver had stopped the Land Rover so that we could have a drink and a snack, just before dusk. It was then that the guide saw the bird in the tree. Nobody else saw it until he pointed it out to us. The dim light was challenging for this image, and I had to do some editing to make it look presentable.
