Thanks Flyboy. One of the great things about raw editing is that you can go back to the original. The BW edits are in Silver Efex. I can easily create a new tiff with the raw and do a new edit with the new tiff. Then, the two edits can be compared side by side. All the very helpful comments are underscoring the subjectivity that underlies photography- I guess one could say the artistic side as opposed to the technical side. :)

I'm gonna be something of a reprobate...I LIKE the original, but believe the water adds less to the image, and should be reduced by about 1/3 of that in the original. The blue sky could be reduced slightly, but to me, it says "Severe weather coming!" giving a sense of drama to the image. IMNHO, lightening the trees just takes attention away from the subject...the mountain! Either way...a truly spectacular photo! The woods should be "...lovely, dark and deep"!

I agree. If the foreground subject of a landscape photo is water, the water needs to be special. Really special. The foreground in your shot might have been improved by including the near shoreline if there were items of interest you could include in the shot, such as very large rocks/boulders.

I do like this photo and I think it looks better in BW. I have worked on the edit numerous times and for some reason I am just not happy with it. It seems to lack something and I don't know what. The photo was taken very early in the morning - not much after sun rise. The sun is shining on the largest mountain peak (which I believe is Grinnell mountain) and the clouds are shading much of the rest of the landscape. Thanks in advance for all the suggestions.View attachment 2409
I like the image, but I see a “picture in picture” crop as a pano with the mountains and clouds as the primary elements! Ron

 Kathy i love weathery stormy skies and i think you have one there, if it is possible i would try to darken it, try and make it look more ANGRY using masks and curves while at the same time keeping the mountain well lit that alone will lift the image it is my opinion the shadows on the shore line tell the story of light. The success in that image is with an angry sky and flood lit peaks try it! Great image by the way bags of potential

Thanks everyone. Here is the new edit. I brightened up the trees in the foreground and added more contrast to the trees. If you think it needs more brightening please say so - I was a bit cautious because I did not want to lose the darkest part of the photo and hence some of the overall contrast. I cropped to 16/9 and eliminated all but a bit of the blue sky. I added a slight vignette - I tend to be cautious here in case I add too much (increasing or decreasing the vignette will take seconds to do). And ... I straightened the horizon. Horrors upon horrors I thought it was straight!!!!! If only there was an embarrassed emoji available .....
Thanks for all the helpful input.

I think it's stunning and I'm no fan of BW. A little Ansel Adams in you, I believe. :) Really nice Kathy.

Thanks Stevie. I too like stormy skies (got some great ones when I was in Paris). But, it wasn’t stormy that morning. Windy yes, lots of clouds forming around the mountains, yes. But it did get sunny with odd patches of rain here and there (which I tend to associate with mountains). But, I do live in a maritime climate where the sun is a rare and odd occurrence, so perhaps I have a high bar for stormy weather or low bar for beautiful weather!

Kathy, they are all great photos! I thought the second edit was my favorite but people kept having ideas and you executed them well. All are great, good luck on deciding which one to print! Still, I like the space, cloud, water, light and shadow balances better in the second edit. At least I think it was the second one, the one that I 'loved' instead of 'liked'.

Great work!!!

That was so extremely close to level I don't know how it could be distracting....lol it could be the shoreline

I think the beauty of Glacier is color. Not speaking as a photographer.

Yes, lots of beautiful spots in Glacier that are in colour. This photo doesn’t have much colour - it was fairly dark. So I thought it might make a good BW.

Hut, just looked this up. First and lowest peak is Mount Gould, the middle is Grinnell Point and behind and highest is Mount Wilbur. Thanks for the info and correction.
It really is a very dramatic and beautiful photo. Not to mention one of the most beautiful locations on the planet. 😇👍

Thanks Hut! Totally agree with one of the most beautiful locations on the planet. I splurged and spent one night in the hotel for the morning and evening view - worth every penny!!
Right on!
