Website for wildlife/portfolio

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

I recommend you develop a website. I did this a few years ago. It provided an insight to me about website behaviour, design and cemented what I like and dislike when viewing other photographic sites. It is subjective and particular to me, but this is how I wish others to experience my images. I started with a pre-built site but soon migrated to my own site (read steep learning curve). This move was primarily cause I did not like the limitations on what I could do and restrictions on what couldn't do on the initial commercial site I was utilising.

My current site is: https://www.craigmcgowanphotography.com/

On a technical aspect you need to secure a domain name. This includes ongoing costs to maintain ownership of the name. Plus ongoing maintenance of the site every few months. But more importantly I suggest, it allows you to display your imagery as you wish others to view it. You curate your site and is a landing place for anyone who may be interested is seeing your photography. This in itself for me is an interesting ongoing project on my site.

I am not a commercial photographer. In other words, photography is not my full time day job. But I have been pleasantly surprised with the amount of traffic it experiences. Much of it directed from my Instagram account, but also a percentage from non-social media searches. Every so often I receive enquiries that culminate in purchases for either prints, or digital file sales for particular publications/use. For me, this is nice recognition for my photographic efforts.

Now a few years old, I am currently rebuilding my site with what I've learnt and what I currently like in showcasing my imagery. I hope to have this completed and online by next month.

Good luck with your decision and hopefully, your newly established website.
Absolutely the way to go, i have several commercial Word Press web sites custom made and hosted, but not for photography, i manage my CMS and own content, do all my own optimization.

I guess there are different levels of needs and fit. Some people want to share their albums some a core subject others the fine art level.

Your site is exceptional, simple easy to navigate above all the fabulous photography that just connects and evokes emotion with the viewer, i certainly loved it all and was drawn in to keep exploring the site leaving with a WOW feeling

and.................. was inspirational in photography.

I also use Adobe Portfolio for my website, and have been very pleased with it for my purposes.

Beautiful website and exquisite images. Thanks for sharing.

Smugmug is versatile and easy. I dropped it only because I wasn't keeping the site up enought to justify the fee, and no one was visiting.Might go back.

Im a Zenfolio subscriber for over 10 years.
It used to be very good however now they've introduced automatic archiving of images over 12 months old.
The images can be reinstated however the process is time consuming and has to be repeated.
I wouldn't recommend Zenfolio
I used Zenfolio for years, as I wanted to allow downloads of my images at our dog club. They changed the rules dramatically and I gave up on it. It used to be so good, but not now.

Hi,
For a while I have been thinking about the possibility of creating my own website to and use it has a personal portfolio. I am not a professional so it will not have a commercial use, and I understand that the reach/visibility is limited, but it will be a great way to have your work online with good quality, instead of just publishing something on social media.

What do people think about this kind of websites and what would be the alternatives if you want to create such platform? I guess there are some companies that offer some pre-built websites that you can adjust to your taste and needs.

Any thoughts on this?
Hi there, to share my practice.
As a photography enthusiast, I want to organize the photos I take in a systematic way. Now, by making a video to present a short story, the original intention of filming has been fulfilled.

Specifically, after returning home from each shooting, I will select and edit the photos I took, and then use the add-on program "Clipchamp" on Microsoft computers to create, match them with appropriate background music, and turn them into short videos. The music in the video is licensed for free on YouTube, so there's no fee issue.
Very convenient to share with friends.

Hi Kim
I had a look at your website as I'm interested in Smugmug as an alternative to Zenfolio.
I note I am able to right click and download an image on your site, is this intentional and can it be turned off?
Thanks
Thanks for stopping by and letting me know I need to change my settings. My tech skills range in the 0 to -5 on a good day. It seems from my research that placing everything in galleries offers the most control over the images....but remember my skill level. I have friends who use this site to sell images. Since I don't have the time ,don't sell images and already have Flikr to preserve my best images, I closed the SG account.

Your images are very good Kim. I had a look at your Flickr site, some very impressive images there!
