What new features would you want in a Z8/9ii

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

After years shooting a D610 then a D750 I was off put by the “banks” system. I wanted my “U1/U2” back. Then as I got used to it, the banks started to grow on me. A year later I don’t notice those things anymore.

Once I learned how to use “recall shooting functions (hold)" I have everything I want.

I learned the history of the banks, as well as the Nikon focus group they asked who told them- don’t change a thing re banks

I find them crazy- but I’m not a pro 🙄
Usually, interviewing a small group of people, even professionals, is not enough to make a decision. Close cooperation with engineers is needed. And here is some group ))))Although, who knows what was going on in their heads at that moment.

Yep I do it for a living hah- Thom Hogan gave a nice history on the banks- made sense in their minds. However why the company decided not to include U1 etc is a PIA.

These cameras are so darn good I'm not even thinking about a next generation yet. A Z9 will always be too big and heavy for me but a Z8ii in a smaller lighter body could be very tempting

Well, you know, there's always more to wish for 😉

I think for Z9, its about wishing it to have every technology that exists in the world for cameras. And then wildlife and birds are specially a subject where the more frames per second you get, the more you desire, the more fast an autofocus you get, the faster and more accurate you desire.

- raw in pre-capture
- a shutter button with a possibility to raise it (treaded hole in it) what makes it easier shooting with gloves
- enough MPx but increase the DR that sets the benchmark for any other brand and type out there
- increase subject detection ( bird & mammal)
- increased buffer capacity (I personally settle for 20FPS) including CFxB 4 memory cards, perhaps even 2 of those slots on the Z8II
- ditch that ridiculous feature of banks that are written on the mem cards but stored in-body
- have finally the cat miauw shutter sound (kidding)
- and smell 2025 and have file names that go beyond the 8 characters. We are way past the MS-DOS era

And like to add one more item. I shot with Sony for about 2 years and never really got the hang of it but what I really really like was the 3rd wheel at the back of the camera instead of the Nikon joystick and that “wheel” that are just buttons.

The only thing I would want in a Z9ii is to keep the vertical grip but make it slightly smaller and lighter. Though I have not held one, the specs of the Canon R3 seem just about perfect.

Just in case Nikon read this thread!

What I would like:

1) Pre-cpature raw (a must for the next gen camera)
2) Open gate - why should Panasonic and Fuji users have all the fun?
3) Zebras on stills (should be easy to port from Video)
4) USB-C port able to write to external drive (Nikon need to take the whole workflow into account)
5) Ability to preview LUTs on video footage (thinking of those nice Red LUTs)
6) Golden oldie - Ability to lock banks so restarting camera goes back to original Bank settings.
7) Global shutter

What I don't require:
1) More megapixels

As if Nikon will read this 🤣

I want U1/U2/etc

Bank’s for me is useless so far, I Had all my settings dialed in, only to learn I was shooting now how I needed due to a change I made.

They ONLY need to add in this, they don’t need to dump bank’s thus keeping all the pros happy
I’m actually fine with banks…but they should add a single menu option to make them sticky or not…that will satisfy both banks and user modes fans.

One thing i haven’t seen mentioned that I would like to see is the rear lcd screen mechanism. I think Sony’s new design is great that it gives the option of tilt and fully articulated. The only downside would be losing the vertical tilt but I think the flip out screen is just as good for that scenario.

Sony’s screen can do vertical tilt. There is no movement available on other screens that it can’t do.

So it can do the vertical tilt the way Nikon and Fuji implemented? If so, that would be perfect. While I don’t know the durability of it, I would take that over any implementation. That’s something from Sony I’d like to see other manufacturers implement.

One piece of software I would like is a Raw to HE* converter.

what is open gate?

Like to see Z8 slight larger with a vertical shutter button included. Not a full grip, just a vertical shutter button along with 2 additional buttons similar to Z 9 vertical button.

The ability to shoot full sensor in video. Right now the Z9/8 crop bottom and top by about 20%.
Yes, allows you to "reframe" the video in post production so can adjust the position of the visible part across the whole recorded area. Maybe you shot a little too high but with open gate you can move the video down a bit in post to get a better framing.

In addition to my list above #21,
  • Cycle Subject Detection Modes, similarly to switching AF modes with Cycle AF, we have the straightforward option for a subset of choices eg only show Bird, Animal, SD OFF only. If selected as available in the sublist, Auto mode has the added option to open up to full set of categories, or be set for the zoological (i.e. preferred) categories only. Heck, Nikon should be able to add this feature in a Z9 Firmware;
  • Action Priority Autofocus this AI based AF feature is likely to be added in future Nikon MILCs.... This is aimed primarily for athletes, but it's feasible that it should be trained to Focus solely on the Cat amongst the Pigeons, or Leopard among the Impalas, Lion amongst the Zebras etc. Nikon is probably working on a feature similar to Canon's

I haven’t read the whole thread, but I can say what I hope they improve with the second generations of the Z8 and Z9.
  • Precapture i raw. Really crossing my fingers that a FW update can bring this to excisting cameras in some way.
  • Better quality rubber (leather?) grip. The rubber grips are starting to bubble and come loose on my Z9 and this is Not good enough Nikon!
  • The Z9 needs to loose weight and I hope the Z9ii is a bit lighter than it’s predecessor. I’m fine with the weight of the Z8, I even like how it balances on my 600 TC.
  • Autofocus improvements is always welcome
  • Would love a built in GPS on the Z8ii also
  • The Z8 feels a little plasticy when used alongside the Z9, I would like the Z8ii to have the same feel as it’s big brother
This is just my opinion and of course your mileage may vary.
Having both the Z8 and Z9 I must say these are great tools and the second generations of these would have to be a significant upgrade to make me want to take the cost of upgrading!
