Hi everyone, I'm going through my photos from my trip to the Canadian Rockies. On one of the photos, I noticed this weird distortion (circled in white). Are these thermal effects?

Yeah, I’d say thermal or more generally atmospheric effects plus perhaps DoF limits.

Remember at the distances of those trees and the tail end of the train you’re shooting through a lot of atmosphere. Add the motion of the train and the exhaust heat coming off the engine and some disturbances aren’t unusual.
