Where is 200-600mm lens?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

even if the 200-600 is announced THIS year, the demand will be HUGE and I door think it will be in my bag until 2024 if I order it the day it's announced. I hope I'm wrong!

I suspect the volume produced will be more like the 200-500, so while in high demand it won't take forever. This is a critical lens for the Z9 successors in a smaller body. I increasingly expect to see both FX and DX high performance action cameras released with the same body and very similar features. Late September or early October is still about right for the cameras and the lens. If they release a DX body, they will likely release an ultrawide like the 12-28 or wider.

According to Roland Vink's site, there were 225-250,000 units of the 200-500 sold over seven years. That suggests production of 50,000 units per year or a little more for the 200-600. I'm not sure about pricing. I suspect it will be in the $1500 range.

Way overdue announcement only to be compounded by "overwhelming user acceptance" plus " so many unexpected orders" coupled with "so many customers ordering that exceeded our projections" that delivery will be a year out from announcement.

I expect you are right about the 200-600mm delivery.
But as I still have a 300mm f2.8 200-400mm f4 and 600mm f4 AFS lenses - I'm in no hurry...🦘

I hear you. I got the z 70-200 and the 2xTC as my stop-gap until that 200-600 comes along. I booked a trip to the Galapagos over a year ago. which happens next month, and really hoped. So a few months back I ordered the 24-120 and the 100-400 ... this morning when I called the shop, they said "realistically" June or July, So I cancelled the orders and will now just wait patiently for that elusive 200-600 which I do hop, as you said, will be like the 200-500, ie cheap enough to afford but still having great IQ
B&H has the 100-400mm S in stock.

The 70-200mm Z lens is better than the 24-120 and much better than the 24-200 and a good basis for a BIF lens kit.
I tried the 100-400mm and although its a good lens - it isnt quite as good as most of the other Z lenses.
I'm only a product photog so although I love wildlife - i'm happy to use what I have until the 200-600mm comes along...🦘

One option is rent a Sony 200-600 and adapt it.

It is fairly inevitable that it will be a Nikon Z-mount version of the equivalent Sony lens launched AND launched September or October this year.

The road map shows it is NOT an S-line.
So it will not be a replacement to the 200-400/4G or 180-400/4E. AND unless they add $1,000 ir will not have an internal TC.
As a Nikon design it probably will be will be developed from the 200-500 f/5.6 and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 - so a relatively budget lens ($1-1,500) -
such a budget lens is what many are calling for - who want reach but do not want to spend the price of something much longer. AND it does leave the door wide open for a faster 180-400 S-line with TC later - at 10k++

The Launch Event may well include the 85/1.2, 2 DX lenses and the 26mm (which looks like a compact, but maybe something else).
What is less clear is whether and when the Z 600mm F/4.0 TC VR S-line will be launched AND what new or updated Camera Bodies will also be launched-- I hope it is at the same time.
Such an event would be an ideal time for Nikon to issue an update to the Road Map to layout the next group of lenses (at least in outline) they anticipate producing to take them towards their target of 50.

Beyond the current road map most folk do not want another 24-> zoom or another long focal length glass. They want Wide and Bright Primes for FX and possibly DX to. From Ultra wide 8-15 Fish Eyes and ultra sha rpe bright primes at the usual FL from 14mm up through 135, 150, 185 and 200. Hopefully with a few longer focal length Macros in there too. I hope Nikon has the cojones to go for a bright 180/185mm MACRO f/2.8 or brighter
I do not currently foresee a 135mm f/1.? DC (Defocus Control) - but this would be a fascinating lens - the F/2 D version originally launched in 1990 and updated to a D in 1995 was special. A recent patent was referred to in another place.

I hope the reason for the delay is due to Nikon changing their approach with this lens design. It will be great if they make it an S line, 5.6 fixed aperture, internal zoom with a faster AF motor. Will be even better if they launch 2 versions one S line semi-pro version and a non s-line budget version with variable aperture.

The 200-500mm AFS lens is a fixed f5.6.
A similar 200-600mm Z lens would be very good S or no S...🦘

Being a longtime lover of the 200-400 f/4 / 180-400 f/4 models, I would love to see a 200-600 "S" with an eye to those past models. By making it a straight f5.6, it would require a larger front element and catapult the price to the $5000 (+) US level. While this model would suit my "wants," I do not see the 200-600 S being produced in the near future (or ever).
I suspect that the long delay for this lens is linked to the success of Sony's lens. While I have no direct insight into what is happening behind the "closed curtain," I would not be surprised if Nikon had partnered with Tamron to make the 200-600, and this design had an external zoom much like the Tamron/Sigma/ & Nikon 200-500 models. Sony's $2000 200-600 is more lens per dollar than the competitive non-OEM lenses in the FE mount, and the Sony version has been a gateway "drug" into the Sony system for wildlife & casual sport shooters. With the inevitable comparison that will be made and the "torching" Nikon experienced w/ the Z6/Z7, Nikon was forced to "take a mulligan" and redesign the lens.

My thoughts... the 200-600 will be a Nikon-Tamron collaboration like the 28-75 f2.8, it will have an internal zoom, but will not have the high-end coating or "best" super-ED glass. It will compete with Sony on price and performance, and we will have no fewer than 4 threads on BCG and FM comparing the Nikon to Sony... half of which will be closed by moderators trying to cool down the debate... ;):D

Agree and hope with you. Related to another thread, in the absence of cine lenses, the bright primes, 24-135 would be great.

The SONY 200-600 was announced three years ago. The Nikon 200-600 will need to be as good or better across all performance areas after arriving so late to the ballgame. With that type of performance who cares if it is an S or a BS, uses ED glass or Coke bottle bottoms, it is just way past its due date and needs to be worth the wait. Oh, and production capability and delivery in a reasonable time would be nice.
