Which Macro Lens?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Another option to consider if you just want to play with macro/ try it out and not spend a lot of money would be one of the older manual focus lenses. The AIS 105 f4 and 200 f4 can be had from $100-200 or so. These do only go to 1:2 or half life size without extension tubes or teleconverters. If you find it something you like you could then sell it and spend more on one of the more modern options.

I just received my new AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm VR and made a few quick and dirty "first light" hand held shots with my D500 in lower light in an overcast rainy day toward evening, because I could not wait.

Thank you for all your inputs and suggestions, but I think I will get a lot of fun out of this lens.

Best,

Mike

For what it's worth I love using the macro 105 2.8 (I have both the d and the VR versions -- if someone wants to buy the d version, contact me :) ) for portraits, as well. Gloriously sharp lenses (but have only used them on the D3, D6 and Z6; the d is manual focus on the Z, of course).
