Sometimes called a White-tipped Bumblebee, it's only the Queen that has a white tail on the abdomen --- this is a male which emerges around August, the Queen however has been on the wing since the spring. This species has a short tongue for a bumblebee so tends to forage on flowers with a short corolla, or daisy-type flowers, however it is resourceful enough to make a hole through the base of the corolla in other flowers to drink the nectar. They nest in the ground, often in an old mouse or vole nest
