Who’s buying the Sony a1MK2?

If you would like to post, you'll need to register. Note that if you have a BCG store account, you'll need a new, separate account here (we keep the two sites separate for security purposes).

Are you buying the Sony a1MK2

I've had my order in for a couple weeks already. But I'm just waiting to hear back from my dealer to see if he will discount it for me. Typically he won't discount when it is brand new and he has a waitlist. But he will discount if he has some sitting in stock. So I may just wait a month till he has them in stock and get a small discount. Or not...GAS may take over and I'll just get it on day 1.
I will sell my A1 but no rush so will have both side by side to run a few tests back to back between them before I sell it. I found some real regressions in the underlying non-tracking AF behaviour between the A9III/A7RV (which had AI chips) compared to the A1/A9II/A7RIV without the chip that I didn't like and I want to confirm that back to back a bit more.

Ill take one out for a spin in a couple months. The specs are golden, and if the ergos are like the A9iii I tested, it will be tempting. Waiting to hear whether there is overheating in long-form video.

So Sony is not doing any pro support for pre orders on this camera. Was a little surprised by that. Don’t know if that’s because they are expecting low sales or high sales. I didn’t have it for the first a1 but still got one on launch day and had serial number 300 range!

I'm right on the edge. I listed all my Nikon gear, but until that first piece of gear sells (depending on which piece it is) it isn't too late for me to back out LOL

I'm going to the Sax Zim Bog the first week of January, so if they really don't start delivering till new Years Eve that could put me in a tight spot. May keep a Z9 or get an A9 III just in case, to guarantee I have a body to use.

also talk about sticker shock on CFA cards.... OWC doing their 960GB for $390

I have 10 CFB cards totaling about 4.2TB that I paid around $2K for over the last few years. I'll be getting about the same amount of storage for a little less price, but only spread across 4 cards.

Doesn't make sense to buy any of the other CFA that I see though, 512GB is selling for the same price, and 256GB is only a $150 savings. 25% of the space for 62% of the price..

I did the same thing a couple years ago. Depending on if you have lots of mirrorless lenses, I would tread carefully switching systems but that’s just my two cents. I thought the grass would be greener and lost several thousand dollars in the process, only to find it’s not greener lol. Plus all the hassle of selling, re buying and acclimating to a new system. I shot nikon for over 20 years before switching to Sony and there have been many times I’ve wondered if a made the right move.

Sell it all. If you get screwed i will loan you my backup OM-1 and a couple of lenses. At least you will be able to shoot pre-capture in RAW and you won't get as tired lugging the gear around. (note: serious offer, not a joke.)

I also switched from Nikon a couple of years ago and sold everything I could and gave away the rest. I saved a lot of money by not waiting. Nikon does not tempt me because of the weight of the Z8. Sony does

Not sure I follow? He’s selling gear not me. I think all the mirrorless systems are very close in performance at this stage and switching systems should be a very careful decision. It was easier for me because I still had f-mount glass and some z-mount at the time. If someone is fully invested in a mirrorless line, then it would be very tough to make the decision to switch systems entirely.

Sorry I misunderstood. However, I do maintain a spare OM-1/100-400 that I loan out so whoever might be in a pickle and going on a trip I would loan the gear to.

I am definitely out as far as getting the mark 2. I just don’t see anything worth justifying spending $3500-$4k for something, when at the end of the day, I will come home with the same images and videos. I also would not feel right selling my current A1 to a private individual knowing it still has issues created by the firmware. I just can’t square in my mind anything about it being a smart money decision, nor can I see anything about it that’s going to improve my photography over the current A1, but that’s just me.

Eh, switching systems is no big deal to me. Swapping from Canon to Nikon was one of the best things I've ever done, photography wise.

Inevitably, today, all of the big 3 are very similar and they just leap frog back and forth. So I've had pretty good luck going from brand to brand on new releases so that I always have the best features instead of having to wait for a brand to catch up or whatever.

I'm with you. If I can't make excellent images with an R5, Z9, A1, etc, it isn't the camera.
