Your thoughts on camera bag, backpack or roller

I select the airlines in large part on their policies regarding carry-on baggage as some are quite good about it as with American Airlines, domestic and international, and others are a real PITA as with United. When I am not flying in business or first class I will buy an economy seat upgrade that provides for priority boarding and so there is much space in the coach area overhead bins for my bag.

Gate checking is still much better than checking luggage at the ticket counter. The bag is last on and first off and avoids the TSA and baggae handling thieves as well as there tossing the bag around.

Hard cases weigh 10 lbs more empty than a backpack or travel duffel and this means less can go inside and avoid weight penalties imposed by the airline agents. The Pelican Air cases cost more but are significantly lighter than other hard cases and to I replaced my old Pelican with the new Air type.
